Absolutely one of my favorite Coen Bros. It took me a few years of people constantly nagging me about it, but I came around. Laugh riot. Sorry DJ that you didn't like it.

the first time i watched it i had a very similar "you've got to be kidding, right?" reaction. then i gave it a second chance the next day and laughed a little bit. a few weeks later, it was on at a friend's house and i laughed a little more. this continued where every few months (or even weeks) i'd catch part of it and find something else totally amusing. finally i sat down to watch the whole thing again and loved it. this is the definition of a grower.

This is actually the second time I've seen it. The first was sometime in the late 90s and I basically had the same reaction. Why am I watching this? Why is everyone yelling so much? By the end when The Dude figures everything out and Donny dies I'm fucking perplexed as to why this is a cult favourite, then I'm reminded that 'Withnail and I' is also a cult favourite and realize that people like just about everything.

Focus on the Goodman character, Charles.

Also, The Dude and his interaction with other people.

This would make my top 10 movies of all time, probably, and definitely top 5 comedies.

I agree.

The movie was largely irredeemable, EXCEPT for the brilliant Dick Pepperfield.

Also, I just finished watching The Big Lebowski. Why the fuck is this supposed to entertaining? Jesus christ, I just had to go and slam my fingers in the door to cheer myself up.

I think its more of a cult thing. You either get it, or you don't. I think it also helps to watch it more than once.

Same with me. I hated it the first time I saw it, but it is now probably Top 20 (if not 10) of my all-time favorites.

Wow, man. We are not on the same page with this one. I can't pick at what point the movie goes off the rails for me, but the multiple dream sequences absolutely enraged me this time, especially the "Just Dropped In" part. I nearly shut it off at that point but thought I'd persevere. And then the ending? It just kind of stops, mercifully at 117 min.

American Gangster - I enjoyed it. By no means is it the Godfather but I'm a sucker for murder, drugs, and chick cutting heroin buck naked. Pretty interesting source material and pretty decent acting.

My only complaint is I think Ridley Scott had a hard time weaving all the different aspects of the story line into a cohesive narrative. It's like he couldn't figure out if he wanted to do an "American Dream Gone a Wry" or a "Good cop vs Dirty Cop story" or a "contrast of characters" or a "contridiction of a hero" story, etc. Not saying that all those can't be pulled off in one movie but I don't think Scott pulled it off.

This is hard to wrap my head around.

But then I flat out loved the movie the first time I saw it - when I was 17 or 18 - and I think it's had a big influence on my movie watching ever since. It seemed to fit right in with some of the other stuff I had recently seen, like Quentin Tarantino stuff where it feels like anything can happen at any moment, and it's guaranteed to be fucked up and sadistically fun.

The new Futurama movie.
...plot was a bit below the first movie, but humor was a step above. So i consider it successful.

i just finally watched there will be blood. i thought it was pretty good though that preacher character bothered me way more than DDL. i think the exchanges between them were probably the best part of the movie. it seemed like it wrapped things up too quickly though.

anyone else think he sounded exactly like jack palance in this?

La Haine - I loved this movie. It's about three friends growing up in housing projects during riots with the police. I saw it in college, but I wanted to revisit it. It came out in '95 and it still feels fresh today. Awesome visual style, even though he rips off Spike Lee and Martin Scorcese, he does it reeally well.

I liked La Haine a lot when I watched it last fall or so

Yesterday I watched Revenge of the Nerds II that I taped last week off an HBO channel. Bradley Whitford was the head jerk!

saw "the fall" last night. . . tarsem's new movie. i should have known better. cinematograthy/photography was gorgeous, the locations were beautifal and beautifully shot, but the plot and writing seemed to have been written by a 12 year-old. . . i'm not even kidding.

beautiful film but, as you'd expect from him. it's super stylized though the dialogue is super clunky and just plain bad. . . i understand what he was going for but he simply missed. save your money and go rent a national geographic special on the taj mahal, the gardens of iran, and moorish architechture in spain.

Saw Persepolis last night. Great, beautiful movie.

It just sort of stops, but memoirs are kind of like that I guess, unless the person dies.

i wanted to like in bruges more than i actually did. colin farrell was great in it and the girl was cute but ralph fiennes character was just a rip-off of ben kingsley in sexy beast. and you could see the ending coming a mile away.

the promotion was pretty good but i kinda felt like it was holding back from john c. reilly and seann william scott going balls out on each other. and when did lili taylor get kind of hot?

yeah I loved everything leading up to the end, but they really boxed themselves into a corner with their story and it was the only way to close it out, I guess. the dialog is funny as hell though.

Saw Wanted.

-Plot was reminiscent of a video game including one of the most ridiculous ideas ever conceived by anyone. Ever.

-Action scenes and special effects were top notch and completely over the top as they should be in a movie like this.

-Angelina Jolie is fucking hot.

Overall, not even a good popcorn flick but I never considered leaving or anything. Decent for what it is. This film has a future on FX.
