i'm up to two now:

my current guitar is some kind of label-less bastard strat, lefty strung righty hendrix style, played through a marshall haze tube amp. i've used this for most of my recent Autobody stuff and is my general go-to combo for any kind of guitar coloring and whatnot.

but

i just bought this baby:

Image

Hagstrom Viking Semi-Hollowbody Baritone Guitar (Tobacco Sunburst)

...and will be playing it through a sunn beta lead with 6x12 cab and a big muff. i'm looking to craft an updated Autobody sound palette out of this, primarily going for the noisy, guttural loud-as-fuck riffage.

it's being shipped now. i'm super super excited about this

i almost got a rat pedal, but i played one next to the BM and liked the BM better....

i've also discovered this crazy dark underworld of niche pedal manufacturers. i'm sure you guys already know about this shit but it's blowing my mind...

Reminds me of that chick from Jucifer's rig. She played a bass through a crunchy guitar head, into a massive pile of 12's and/or 15's. Just her and a drummer.

Nobody bit on my Mesa on CL. Have to post it again... I want a small badass amp.

what would classify as a small badass amp for you?

also, i just bought a pod. pretty excited to dick around with all the virtual amp modeling on this one. do you have any thoughts on these things?

the small badass amp topic made me think of this

the "duh-nuh" rhythm guitar on the verses (not the trippy delayed guitar) of this song:

was recorded through one of these when we tracked it at fridmann's studio

(chuckling) what kind of mic?

As for "badass small amp," a few pages back we went on a tear about it. The short of it is, I need to be able to bike something around pretty easily, so I'm leaning towards the smallest / lightest / most rugged 12" thing I could find, which was a ZT Club. The video on their site doesn't sound all that good, but other youtube folks with better mics convinced me it was deep and clean enough for a steel to not sound like poop, and I can work with the rest if it gets me a 22 pound rig that small and unbreakable... no tubes rattling around on a bike rack. I like that. Otherwise it was going to be a tiny tube head and a 1x10 or 1x12 cab. Bigger, heavier, more $.

POD: Never dicked around with one. But I need something that does lots of good headphone sounds, since my pocket thingy broke, so please try that thing out and report back. I wanna line in an ipod and chug along with shit when I have a buzz.

So what I had (and still have, not really working right anymore, in a drawer) was this Roland thing about the size of a pack of cigs that did something similar. It had banks of things to tweak, between gain (types and amounts), tone, cab type, and effects. You could reasonably recreate a lot of different kinds of amp sounds, if you were willing to twiddle the not-so-intuitive knobs that reminded me most of a first-gen Nintendo controller. Once you had set up some good presets, though (which I normally named for the band they allowed me to play along with), you could toss a 1/8" headphone cord into it from a laptop or ipod and go nuts.

Then it dropped from about 3 feet onto a bamboo floor, and decided it was time to retire.

I used one of those cigarette-pack amps for the noise guitar track in this song:

Yup.
I'll swing by after work and pick it up.

Next on the to-do list:
Replace the tubes in my Delta Blues 1x15
and
Refret my '88 Squire Strat.

hey guys...what's a decent bass for around $200? i realize that's not much and won't get me the fancy mccartney-style bass-olin thing. i just need something solid for tracking rhythm parts with my limited geetar skill level.

Used mexican fender is the best "bargain" I know of. Not sure what they go for, but they play great, they last well, and you can always upgrade pickups later if you need to.
