Saw Ang Lee's Hulk last night. I kinda liked it even though it was a bit long.

There are very few movies in the world that are perfect, but this is without a doubt one of them.

Just watched John Sayle's Lone Star for the first time in a long while---definitely Sayle's best movie and one of my favorite films of the past several years. Chris Cooper and Kris Kristofferson are great in this---even Matthew McConaughey is good.

I wish they'd release a decent dvd of this movie.

Finally got around to Iron Man. Downey was great, and it's now my new favorite Marvel movie.

Watched this Friday night with FemDerris. I went into with a good deal of trepidation. Produced by Oprah's Harpo Films, Directed by Denzel, and a minority/underdog type of story/formula. I thought it could've been a hamfisted hit you over the heard type of inspirational story.

I thought it was great. Acting is top notch and although it does follow a formula it is all done so well. Just a good damn movie that doesn't try to be anything other than what it is. A positive, inspiring, flick.

the orphanage was the creepiest movie i've seen since session 9.

I haven't seen session 9, but I thought El Orfanato was pretty creepy. I saw it with my friend and every now and again I try and make that whistle noise just before the creepy kid with the bag over his head knocks momma over and locks her in the bathroom (i think I am remembering that correctly). The title sequence of the film was awesome as well.(the wallpaper being torn, etc.)

Also, Shiv, what is the deal with you watching all of those Bond films? I thought I was the only crazy one. All I can say is: Don't. Do. It. :)

i bought the first 2 box sets of them and i'm trying to watch all the crappy ones first.

i love this poster for el orfanato but can't find it anywhere.

re: the mist. the ending of the book just has them drive off into the mist and that's it so i kinda like the ending of the movie better.

Orfanato, just saw this, yeah creepers alright

This was interesting. Good overview of the man's life. Being a fan of Strummer's exploits I found it to be entertaining, and a perfect companion piece to Westway to the World.

Tomorrow, if I stay in town I hope to sit down and watch these:

An absolutely gorgeous piece of cinema. I love when filmmakers are allowed to completely delve into their mind's eye and pull out wonderful films. Tarsem, of course, is the director of 'The Cell' as well, which had amazing visuals, but was bogged down by Vince Vaughn and J Lo. In 'The Fall', Tarsem is allowed to wander as far as he wants, and never at any moment do you feel a restraint--probably the fact that he financed the film himself. Lee Pace is a likable and rugged lead, the kind that fits perfectly with the Errol Flynns of the world. The real treat though is Catinca Untaru, who plays an Indian girl who has broken her arm in a fall at a nearby Orange Grove. Part of her charm is the fact that her broken English is always adorable and never pushed. Her innocence, wrapped within Pace's ability to play a suicidal injured stuntman, make this work on the "reality-side" of the film.

The other side however, plays heavily on a Wizard of Oz complex. Part of that once again so perfectly fits with the little girl's imagination as Pace's character relays this "epic".

This comes out Sept. 9th on DVD, but I highly recommend you see it on the screen if available near you. Its truly a beautiful film both in visuals and message.

British indie - I enjoyed it a lot.

When art student Ben develops insomnia after being dumped by his girlfriend, he starts working the late-night shift at the local supermarket to occupy the long sleepless hours. There he joins a colourful cast of characters who each have their own 'art' of dealing with the boredom of the night shift. Ben’s ‘art’ is that he imagines himself stopping time to appreciate the artistic beauty of the frozen world and the people inside it – especially Sharon, the quiet checkout girl, who perhaps holds the answer to the problem of Ben's insomnia.

I'm a sucker for these types of films and I liked it as well. Nothing that was stunningly original but it entertained me, so there you go.

yes, deserves every cinematography/dp award they have.

on the flip side the script was disjointed and seems to have been written by a 12 year-old. it plays really heavily on the fantasy world/real world dynamic of pan's labyrinth, too. i think that face that it was filmed on and off over three years added to the drawback, too.

i think tarsem would be better served as dp and not a directer. . . he just don't seem to instill that "feeling" that allows a script to transcend the written page. the performances were really good, but i feel like they actors were, again, badly directed. in a lot of ways it felt more like an art piece than a feature.

but, yeah, abso-fucking-lutely gorgeous!

edit: cap'n and i saw hellboy 2 last night. disappointing that it was much more "michael bay" than it's predecessor. oof!

Dunno why it took me so long. Always been a big Albert Brooks fan.

I guess it's seeing him on the first new episodes of "Weeds" that got me to check back his filmography.

This movie is fucking hilarious. Just wickedly smart.

I'm not sure how or why this one ended up on my Netflix queue.

The premise was a bit hard to swallow, but after getting past that little problem, the rest of the film was pretty disturbing.
