finally got around to Eastern Promises kast night. It was good, but I wish it hadn't stopped where it did.

Also, nekkid knife fight!

I also watched the bulk of Season 1 of Friday Night Lights, which keeps getting better.

Even better than the first, so I'm expecting really great things from no. 3. If you haven't queued these I highly recommend them. Plus, right now they are streaming on the 'Flix.

Bought the set off amazon yesterday.

Same here...blu-ray for $25. Was going to see these in the theater but at $10 each, obviously cheaper to just wait and buy.

Are we supposed to have all heard of this movie/series?

It got a lot of press in the rags for being a really well done trilogy of films in the UK. It had limited screenings in the US. I don't know if its the best thing to come out of Britain, but its very, very good. If you like crime dramas then you'll enjoy this.

And, with anything that is made on foreign soil and has a modicum of success--its being remade for the US. Of course, 3 movies/4 books will be condensed into a 2 hour movie for US audiences (no lie).

I saw a trailer for it at some point before something I saw at one of the arthouse joints I go to every now and then. Haven't seen anything about it since. Not even sure it played here.

Color me intrigued. I'm assuming these are out on dvd? If so, I bet the local indie rental place has it.

Did some checking on it and you're right, Ridley Scott is negotiating to direct the US movie version.

Im fairly hip for your average honky, and probably the hippest cat in Alabama, and I don't have a clue what the other films are named, what they're based on, who's in them, or any plot points.

This was great for a few reasons, Lana Turner is smoking hot, the supporting actors are brilliant the best being Hume Cronyn, and It's a perfect noir setup and story. It has it's flaws and there is some silliness at the end, but it's worth watching just for Turner. B+

Really good thriller, solid A-

Should have seen this long ago, creepy as hell...not sure if I'll bother with the sequels or the remake, but I was glad I watched this. B+

also, just finished the first in that Red Riding trilogy, it was good.

This week I watched this uber-cool film. Funny and at times dark. You all probably never heard of it. It was called MacGruber.

Pretty interesting. Somewhat contrived. Would have liked some sort of bonus feature or post-script chronicling the fallout, especially with his parents and organized religion in general.

Is anyone else missing the Netflix "friends" feature as much as I am? I ended up adding a lot to my queue because of it.

Anyway, thanks thread.

Howl. james franco is very good in the role of allen ginsberg, but the story here never felt significant. the movie bounces all over from a reading of "howl" to animated retellings of segments to the obscenity trial to an interview with ginsberg that's full of flashbacks. some of it's well-done and insightful, and some of it drones on and on. two things that bothered me were the attempts made to explain the poem (why settle something so ambiguous?) and that the obscenity trial is now really just a footnote in literary legal cases, even though it's presented as much bigger. (although, i guess it was a big deal in 1957 through miller v california.)

Did they get rid of it? Honestly, I never really paid attention to or used it other than initially friending some people on this board like 5 years ago.

Apparently I was in the minority, which is why they dropped it, but I did check it almost daily and found it to be a good way to find movies I might not have otherwise.

Ok, I'll tackle this first. Dave, watch the movies :D But really, I get what your saying. I completely wouldn't have heard about these if my friends hadn't recommended them to me (when they watched them on-demand), or if I wasn't an addict of film blogs. The best ones are worth searching for, right?

A woman I work with was a PA on this film. I rented it way back, so I'm a bit foggy, but I do remember that it was pretty revelatory, and saddened me. Its stuff like this that gives "religion" a bad name. Following up on it, I read that this was a pretty big deal at the time.

Yes! This is one feature Netflix subscribers always complain about missing. Netflix has just said they didn't see any reason to continue with it since it didn't benefit the system. Or they didn't want to pay someone to constantly upgrade it. It was great. I really liked Netflix friends to see if there was something I should add.
