Exhibit #348 why I love this fucking sport/religion.

Outside of the UGA game, I thought this weekend's slate of games was going to be a giant turd of a layover until next week. Instead, it shaped the entire year.

With apologies to Okie St. fans, the post-game speech the Iowa St. coach gave to his players, where he choked up at the very end, is honestly why I continue to be affected by this silly little game.

All the greatest virtues of it were on display this weekend; believing when no one thinks you can do it, never giving up, and perseverance.

This shit lets me down time and time again, but I keep coming back for weekends like this one.

Exactly what the season needed after two weeks of the Sandusky case. Even with all the distractions and pending NCAA investigations, Penn State stuck to their strengths (ground game, defense, kicker) for their second win in Columbus in the last four years. They've earned at least share of the division title, and the winner of next week's game at Madison will play Michigan State for the conference championship. At 9-3, they've already surpassed my on-the-field expectations. We'll just see what the future brings...

Assuming Penn State pulls the rather shocking upset at Camp Randall, then beats Michigan State at Lukoil Stadium, what is the chance the Rose Bowl (& all other bowls) pass on the Nittany Lions?

I'm saying 49%.

If Penn State loses in Camp Randall, the chance of playing in any bowl goes to 10%.

That article Sketch just posted Wrote:
While the NCAA could limit Penn State’s ability to play in postseason bowl games, the existence of an investigation likely won’t matter for the bowl selection committees this year.

“Penn State is going to bring fans, and that’s what it’s going to boil down to,” said Michael Smith, who covers college sports for SportsBusiness Journal. “Penn State brings fans and sells tickets. I think if there was any concern about that, the 107,000 plus that came out to the Nebraska game allayed any fears as to whether fans will show up. The biggest concern bowl directors have is selling tickets. It appears Penn State will maintain the fan support it has always enjoyed.”

Sponsors might be a different story, Smith said.

The NCAA action will make some of them reconsider their association with Penn State, which, without a doubt, is under a negative light.

“On the other hand, staying with the school and being able to say we stood by the school through hard times, that can turn into a market platform for sponsors,” Smith said. “After a time passes, a sponsor can promote the fact that it sat by the school, and it’s going to be here for the good times.”

True, the NCAA prolly won't enjoin Penn State from playing postseason football, but the bowls are not the NCAA. For sure, I could see the Rose saying no to Penn State, given the organizers's stuffiness -- in this case, a good thing -- but I don't think any bowl wants to touch Penn State.

Plus, they cited the turnout at the Senior Day as evidence of PSU fans's willingness to turn out, still. Question: what percentage of the crowd was Huskers rooters? & would those PSU fans at that game be as willing to travel for the game as they were to drive the ten minutes from home to Beaver Stadium? (Why invest in the plane fare, hotel, food for a school that has utterly failed you?)

I would think it'd be a PR nightmare to ban Penn State from a bowl. I don't see it happening.

It seems wrong to ban the team since no players were involved, doesn't it? They would be the real ones to suffer. (aside from the financial impact to the University)

Based on visitors' ticket allotment (3600), about 3.3%. That leaves 103,400 (EDIT #2: crap math) to account for...

Even if you (quite falsely) assume that every townie and student goes to the game and remove them from the previous figure, you'd still have 13,500 people to account for. State College is in the middle of fucking nowhere. The reality is that most of the people in that stadium are alumni who drive over 3 hours (each way) for every home game. If they felt such strong betrayal by the institution as you imply, they wouldn't have made the trip for the Husker game.

I get the bowls may not *want* to touch Penn State, and I appreciate the sentiment. All that said, I suspect at least one will take their alumni's money anyway. EDIT: Stone/SB's comments about PR speak to both sides of it quite well.

You really think the general public is viewing Penn State as a whole as irreputable and deserving of some kind of sanctions (and not just the people involved, the majority of which are no longer there)?

You might be right, but I think since Paterno has been let go, and the two who are charged with perjury, the public may have a more sympathetic view of the university as a whole (and the football program) now, and especially as opposed to that way it was perceived before Paterno was let go.

I know that I agree with you, personally. I also agree that a bowl ban would only really punish the players, who had nothing to do with this. I also know that there's a substantial percentage of the population who just throw a "Penn St." blanket over the entire scandal and would raise bloody hell if they were invited.

Um, so yeah...go State! Didn't see that Clemson beatdown coming but then again, it is Clemson. Still, we hadn't beaten them since 2003. A close game was not unfathomable, but no one could have predicted 37-13 (with the late TD coming in garbage time).

Ok, discussion of LSU losing to Arky and still getting there is available. I think it's right. BCS would be completely blown up, so media won't allow it. Don't care, we gonna beat a hog.

I personally would take an even money bet that their TOTAL ENROLLMENT shrinks by 25% in the next 3-5 years. They are never going to get over this, because the whole story hasn't come out. It's still going to get worse, and even though their stupid fucking failures of fans and alumni (sorry Sketchy) would travel, I wouldn't take the payout over the PR scandal/drama.

The NCAA has no reason to give them the death penalty - it's going down anyway. If you were a recuit (or a recuit's parents) how THE FUCK would you even CONSIDER going to Penn State? How do you tour the locker room without The Massive Shame?

Also, NCAA sanctions tend to affect plenty of players who had nothing to do with past infractions.

I normally don't mind LSU - they're usually among the more likable of the major college powerhouses. But for BCS-busting purposes, I will be rooting for UGA this week as if I had actually attended classes with Squirrgle, Busty, Derris, Stu, Bloor and LooGAR. GO DAWGS!

The only thing better than the credibility bashing Meyer is going to take for this, will be watching him try to win with scholarship reductions and bowl bans over the next 3-4 years. I'm sure after a couple of 8-9 win seasons he'll cite "health reasons" again.

Actually, the best part of this whole thing, is Florida sitting at 6-6 watching their ex-girlfriend go bang somebody else.

Don't get your hopes up fellas. I'm as dyed in the wool Bulldawg as they come and even I'll concede that this will be a fairly monumental upset if it happens. I expect a 14 point or bigger opening spread.

But, like they say, LSU might beat us 8 or 9 times out of 10 but all we need is the 1.

Our D is legit.
