Sound-On-Sound is one of the most fastidiously obsessed of its kind. ( I wanted to give you a broader base so I only used three here). Bill was unjustly lumped in with the Bowie casualties of the late seventies/early eighties that cropped up during the new wave/electro-pop cusp and specifically: those of the Gary Numan ilk behind lines of synthesizer string cheese trying its best to be Kraftwerk, but only as perceived by Bowie on “Heroes” and “Low” when the whole time the whole lame ballyhoo was nothing less than a continual re-take/re-plunder on Roxy Music. Bill Fay

I'm lazy and looked for a description of Fay online to steal but cuoldn't find one i liked. Fay was an avant garde british folkie, singer-songwriter and pianist in the late 60's/early 70's with a cult following. His work is folk for lack of a better descriptor but it really defys categorization. His self-titled debut featured a 27 piece orchestra, while his follow-up, "Time of the Last Persecution" was much rawer and at times had much harder electric guitar than would typically be found in folk music. Both albums were recorded in a single day. He would later release a third album, "Tomorrow Tomorrow Tomorrow," which I only recently purchased and am still digesting. I opted not to include anything from the third album which doesn't seem nearly as strong at first listen. I did include two tracks from his demos and extras collection, "From the Bottom of an Old Grandfather Clock."

These albums were all reissued a few years ago and got tremendous reviews, especially from the british press who compared him to Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Ray Davies and Nick Drake among others. For me, the best comparison would be a more avant garde and experimental Lennon. I hear similarities in the lilt of his voice and also in his melodic structures but that's probably where any comparison begins and ends. Even though I was only pulling from 3 albums, it was really hard to get this down to 10 songs. Those albums are really great. Get them if you find you like this.

Not that it should matter but Jim O'Rourke and Jeff Tweedy are big fans and Tweedy apparently has covered "Be Not So Fearful."

This could have had a number of configurations since Roddy Frame has so many others songs I like equally well. For those not familiar, it's exquisite Scot jangle pop that skirts both schmaltz and extreme brooding but doesn't fall prey to either. Songwriting, class and guitar chops consistent throughout a career that's had Frame written off as a former wunderkind who peaked with his first album though he kept on releasing top quality sophistipop that just wasn't as edgy as some people wanted. One of my favorite dudes, anyway.

Well, seeing as that song is listed in the tracklist I suppose it is. I guess we have different definitions of "cheesy rocker", or rock in general.

Maybe we do, but that's not really the point. My comment is out of ignorance because, growing up English in Montreal in the '70s, my context of Michel Pagliaro is very different from yours; unless of course you're from Quebec. To me, (and I think to most English Montrealers), in those days given my context for placing Pagliaro in the musical universe - he was a French guy tring to be Bob Seger. Now if I came to Pagliaro from a discovery 30 years later as a result of an internet board recommendation and I wasn't inundated with his hits growing, my appreciation may be very different. Ultimately my comment that I might have missed something worthwhile because of how he was pigeonoholed to English Montreal, was the real point of my post - not to denigrate the guys music.

I was just shocked to see Pagliaro mentioned on this board, it's just so incredibly out of context for me.

As for Harmonium - if I get around to transferring my vinyl to digital and put up a 10 track primer; I'd suggest you give it a listen.

Really, "cheesy" and "french canadian" are redundant in that sentence. But yeah, I think you missed something there.

And Harmonium would be a good one to do. I've only got the s/t album and would be interested to hear if there's more to them.

Are you from Quebec Radcliffe?

I have Harmonium (s/t) and "Si On Avoir Besoin d'Une Cinquieme Saison" as well as a Serge Fiori solo album but it's all on vinyl. If I get really motivated I'll upload something this week.

I am still working on the SFA tenner.
It's almost done, but in the meantime, here is one from

2-Headed Boy (In the Aeroplane Over the Sea)

Where You'll Find Me Now (On Avery Island)
Gardenhead/Leave Me Alone (On Avery Island)
Ghost (In the Aeroplane Over the Sea)
Now I'm Going Down (Shannon's Monroe House Demos)

I added a couple of rare and live tracks, just to make it a little interesting for those on the board who are already fans. Plus, they only had 2 official albums, anyway!

Fair enough. I'm actually that message board guy in a way because it after posting about Ray Paul & RPM's song 'Time Race', Rads told me it was actually a Pagliario song and made me a mix of his stuff, which I thought was absolutely great and totally familiar. I guess I heard his songs in the 70s and 80s in northern ON but I'll be damned if I was aware of him at all.

Also thanks for the suggestion. I'm going to do some early Bob Seger next.

This needs some Django Reinhardt, which I would volunteer to do except I only have one best-of album. Which is good, but I'd feel guilty trying to compose a tenner mix from one best-of album.

I can do one if no one else steps up. Got some major equipment failures at work. Doing shows live instead of on automation so am pretty busy.

But I'll do one eventually.

It'll have early stuff on it like their version of "Amazing Grace"

Big Boys

What do you get when you mix Texas with punk rock, skateboards, and a heavy dose of soul and funk in the first half of the 80s? You get the Big Boys, a sadly overlooked band that crawled outta the same scene as the Dicks and were early inspirations for groups like the Butthole Surfers. They even mixed a turntable into the mix on a few later tracks well before most other rock bands considered the idea. So yeah, their offspring with the punk/funk mix may not reflect so well on these originators, but judged on their own merits, I think they come off just fine. And, straight forward rock tracks like Fun Fun Fun and We're Not In It To Lose shine through brightly without resorting to musical mixing and matching.

This set srarts with their sparse early punk tracks through their funk explosion and finishes off with a turntablist experiemnt off their last album.

1. Frat Cars
2. Psycho
3. T.V.
4. Spit
5. Hollywood Swinging
6. We Got Soul
7. Fun Fun Fun'
8. We're Not In It To Lose
9. White Nigger
10. Common Beat
