Straight-up floaty-ass prog?

I'm a sucker for prog, so I'd consider that a compliment to the album.

All that aside, though, 'Pompeii' is damn near a Pink Floyd cover. The song is based around the bass and drums of 'One of These Days'. It works, but he should probably be paying a portion of the royaties to the members of Floyd.

Yep. And floaty-ass prog was meant as both compliment and descriptive generalization.

I don't think it's as classic rock/ELO as you might fear, but there's definitely a leap in the focus on "atmosphere" and "movements" in the songs over the previous 2 records. But, there's still a lot of feel-good, silly stuff happening, with homage-style songs (Ambulance Driver), prototypical, inspiring Lips (Sound of Failure), etc.

I've only given it one good listen and that was today on the train back from NY, so my overall take isn't all that positive...but, the highpoints seem like they could be guiding lights for the more "wha?" moments (Free Radicals).

Really digging Mr. Ambulance Driver. An instrumental version of this alone would be pretty sweet, but the vocal on the chorus is spot-on perfect.

this is definitely interesting
i actually am curious to listen to this album the entire way through
multiple times.
not because it's the flaming lips
but because it's interesting.
it's not some force-fed stir-fry fucking stupid indie shat.
although i do enjoy the same old expected horse-shit
when that's what i want.

Force fed?

Who the hell "force feeds" indie? You can pretty much ignore the whole genre without much effort at all. It's not like it smacks you in the head every moment you walk down the street.

If you mean "a lot of indie sounds the same," yeah, it does. but no one's force feeding anyone anything. Unless of course you have a passle of pretentious friends who slouch around filling you with derision about every musical choice you make. In that case, I'm sorry for your plight.

so basically a few songs here are interesting..."the wizard turns on", "pompeii", and "free radicals"

fairly disappointing overall but it's not really a surprising step at all after yoshimi. i'll give it more time to grow but it's pretty much a very large meh right now

Well said. I've only been through the album a couple of times now but I have to say I'm just bored out of my mind with it. The first song is ok except for that freaking "yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah" which drives me nuts!

Other than that, Mr. Ambulance Driver and the Pink Floyd-sounding song are ok but I think I only like them because they're a breath of fresh air after being lulled to sleep by the other songs.

basically, free radicals has worn thin for me.

it overtakes me, goin on, and the wizard turns on are the top tracks. the rest...meh. big time meh. aside from maybe pompeii.

This is my driving around town "yay it's spring!" windows rolled down volume blasting album of the year. I should say "our" since that's how we rolled up on Northsix last Friday night.

People were going nuts to "yeah song" at the show. One of those silly great live songs. Drozd is my hero (minus the heroin).

Great album. I'm perplexed at the negative reviews some of you are giving it. It sounds descended from the Clouds Taste Metallica family of sounds rather than Bulletin and Yoshimi. I don't see how if you like the Lips' sound in general you'd dislike this all that much. Hell of a fun listen.

I think the yeah yeah yeah song is one of the best things they've written in quite awhile.

I'm really liking "The sound of failure" and "The WAND" the rest is decent but i think it'll take some time. Not as immediate as Yoshimi.
