I don't understand why Finch Platte would hate the feature bort suggested (seems like it wouldn't get in anyone's way), but then I also don't understand why Fu hates Finch Platte, or why many of you hate many things. One thing I do know about that feature, though, is that it would (I think) significantly increase the bandwidth of the main forum page, because right now that page doesn't have to access the posts_text table, whereas with that feature it would have to do so for every thread on the topic list page.

What if it only grabbed the text if the person hovers over a special icon? Some AJAX-y thing like ask.com's binoculars.

that's not a bad idea. out of curiosity, is AJAX just another way of saying "doing stuff in iframes," or did i miss a whole revolution?

You need to catch up on them Web 2.0 buzzwords.

Asynchronous JavaScript And XML, useful for grabbing info without reloading entire pages and stuff. No iframes required.

That's about as helpful as I get.

I'm just throwing out the suggestion. If it can be done at all, and can be done easily, why not try it? If we don't like it we can always go back, right?

I don't know anything about ramifications of playing around as a God of a message board, so I'll leave it to Lord Haq to decide.

The only mod out there for a "view first/last post on hover" function does not utilize the efficient web2.01 gobbledegook to which lego refers, and is thus ill-suited to our high-tech needs. maybe over the summer or something.
