The only time I went to NYC (last summer with the Mrs, for the Haq/Cotton wiffleball extravaganza) it was hotter than balls. It severely limited my ability to enjoy our 10 mile death march all over Manhattan. Well, that and the massive hangovers.

well i don't get why the concert thing has to be the centerpiece of all this. it seems like we could put together some kind of dinnerdrinks or something. not all of us are dying to see okkervil river

saturday roaming and observations:

Was out with mr. haq and ms. katie until 'round 3am so I slept in quite late this morning. riding home on the L train at 3am is an interesting experience - some douchebags were trying to get the entire car to sing along with their stupid oldies. somehow, once we got off the car the entire platform was cheering for the guy - no clue how they knew what was going on. there were a couple dudes that didn't look pleased and I thought things were gonna get stabby...I would have held him down.

today I had a little breakfast and coffee in the village, soaked up some sun in washington square park, watched a guy there playing 2 trumpets at once, random roaming. now I am in soho at some cafe where I can get wi fi. this town is around 5 years behind Portland in the number of wi fi spots and public wi fi. even the ones that do exist all seem to charge. get this shit going, haq.

tonight I am hanging out with my cousin, heading to some gallery opening in Brooklyn, and then a lot of who knows what. probably another dozen jack and cokes.

and oh yeah, okkervil river was really good. better than I thought they would be.

why go shopping when you are on vacation. Especially at places like Gap or Abercrombie - doesn't every American town have these? Do you really want to haul all that shit back with you?

my chick insists on shopping wherever we go though she is more interested in the like, local boutiques or whatever because, like you say, we've got all the chain stuff here.

my cousin nearly killed me last night - I survived. More East Village and some more Brooklyn. Also went to Other Music on (i think it was discostu) someone's suggestion and picked up:

1. MMJ album of early recordings/b-sides
2. Soft Effect/Telephono double CD
3. Townes Van Zandt DVD
4. A Mendoza Line album
5. something else I don't remember

Pretty cool place.

Today - having some brunch with my cousin Bob and his girlfriend, then not really sure until Iron and Wine tonight.

moma is really cool. bought a great book. my cousin's boss had a piece there...guess that's why he just produced 12 works that are going to go for 240,000 each.

i hate shopping. i finally found a present for the wife, though.

So - final tally. Is anyone interested in dinner tomorrow night around 8pm?

I believe haq was interested.

Also - anyone have any ideas on locations - I am totally open on that.

saw the Gugg museum yesterday - great Richard Prince exhibition. All of you NY'ers should check it out. brilliant stuff.

met Opa and Aaaron for some drinks - having 8 mojitos may not be a good idea. luckily I was able to sleep in and feel fine this morning.

i found myself defending regular rock alone - it wasn't pretty having two hipsters closing in on you with gypsy folk on one side and crippling generalizations from the other side. the national is good you bastards.

today is going to be just some hanging out with my cousin Alex - not sure exactly what we are going to do - maybe get out of the city.

The National aren't "regular rock," they're post-Joy Division Indiebrood.
