Ten,

Chuck is planning on putting on a festival in St. Francisville. He enjoyed his show there so much last time, and he wants to get a lot of local La. to play. He had always envisioned doing it with Alex Chilton, and now he wants to make sure he doesn't miss another opportunity to play with these guys before they die. I hope it comes together.

Sweet Jesus, I have some VERY bleary memories (fraught with moonshine and brain-killing, unnamed narcotics) of St. Francisville from about 1982. The second day I was there, was drinking in the Ramada, and let some local scalawag talk me into going to The Green Door to...ummm...find some female companionship. Even through a strong chemical fog, it was really obvious that we were the only Caucasians in the place, and weren't getting a very friendly welcome. I have no idea how I've lived this long.

We have got to get together sometime soon. You are truly frightening. And by frightening, I mean a kindred spirit.

My obsession is loading all three of these mega-box sets and playing them on repeat for the last day and a half and expecting to keep doing so for the next week.

Only one listen to this so far, but I think it's safe to say that it'll be an obsession for a little while:

All three of those are fantastic! Stax was the greatest label EVER.

I was listening to these last week after watching HBO's "Treme". Antoine (Bunk) is talking about, and singing, some old song and he mentions the band and the Stax label.

The song wasn't on there but the band was, Ollie and Nightengales. Played a few of their songs on this collection. So fucking good.

you know that was tommy tate on lead vocals for that one - not ollie.

too funny, i went on a mad search for that song ("Just A Little Overcome") after that scene in Treme as well. might be my favorite moment of the entire season so far.

it also lead to a weekend long soul music obsession which got me to finally grab some OV Wright, William Bell, Lee Dorsey, Allen Toussaint, James Carr among some others that i am spacing right now.

soul/r&b is weird for me though...just the slightest bit of cheese or slick, hi-gloss production and i'm totally turned off. but when it's done right it's probably my favorite kind of music.

I just did the Stax tour last week and I don't think I fully appreciated how good the roster was before the tour.

His follow-up was a huge disappointment. Still waiting to see if he can rebound.
