the second paragraph is the boat I think a lot of people find themselves in. as that guy Bacevich was saying, we still haven't come to an agreement in this country about when and where we should intervene in foreign conflicts. i really don't know either and am also very torn about it. if you support the wrong side you end up fomenting hate for generations and possibly damaging American interests. if you ignore it, you can lose your moral standing in the world. maybe there is no overarching framework to help us decide and we have to slog it out on a case by case basis, but that creates so much tension and diversion that it drains the life out of the everything else.

Agreed, it is a thorny problem to know about when and how to use force. What is clear to me, however, that its use should not be unilateral (nor in "coalitions of the willing" that are trumped up.... the Tongan Police Dept.... to appear to be working in concert with other countries of a like mind). The radical right (and mostly other kinds of self-styled libertarians) resist the notion of diplomatic internationalism... demonizing the UN and pointing to the Tri-Lateral commission as evidence of the approach of the End Times.

The NeoCon error (of a long list of bad thinking) is that unilateral use of force to further our interests is effective. I am a pacifist, but the last war that made any sense to me was WWII, in which "the Allies" were half the world which agreed on the danger of creeping facism.
