Well, I'm not really a fan of the Lips, but I do see what you're saying. It's tough to play the comparison game when we're barely talking sound even, but I guess these two share more similarities in color. Animal Collective could take notes from the spectacle of the Lips' show. What I think has been the best aspect of AC's show was the pattern of playing future album material, which has caught up to them finally. That favours the fanatic in a way that almost puts the next level in the audience's hands as much as the band's. Judging by how it came off at Bonnaroo (and not being able to compare with another large show of theirs, outside of 2,000 cap theatres), they won't be the stuff of festival headlines unless they can really bring that spectacle in, maybe more players/instrumentation, deflecting attention from the sample basis, which is why there is some backlash to their live show. I'm thinking of it kind of like how Sonic Youth crossed the threshold into jam band territory around the time when their popularity made them a household name.

AC would kill to have a jam band-esque following

They're on their way, I think.

I mean, if they stick around, they pretty much have to get better live. They need to bring back Deakin.

aka the guitar player which = white jam kids digging them. There's also a really big jam kid following for electronic music right now which fits the Animal Collective MO.

He was also the most animated of the four of them when I saw them play.

You can sell any music to fans of jam bands.

Maybe that's your idea of a good show? I've seen concerts featuring a guy with a guitar that were more impressive than Animal Collective was live when I saw them in Nashville when the music was just falling flat. I've seen them 2x and it's well documented that I'm a huge fan of theirs, but the live show just needs a little more "oomph".

i am digging it more with each listen. i like that it's more laid back. trying not to listen too much though before i get an actual copy.

nice way to finish off the year for them.

maybe i got lucky this last time with them. first time was in NY (at the seaport), and while the music was ace, i couldn't see them because we (shiv, haq, me) we too far back.

the genius lies in the fact that you cannot classify them as any specific genre.

oh, and Noah's voice, and the fact that they wash over you like an OD inducing hit of heroin, and that they make you question where music is headed, and why most other bands are so lame and boring.
