I'm a bit surprised that this pantha du prince gets attention here on obner. I heard it the other day and just thought that it sounds too german in terms of cheesy soft techno...

It's the best electronic album I've listened to this year and I don't find it all cheesy, at least compared to several other electronic albums I've heard.

no I mean, it's not about electronic music in general which is represented here, that doesn't surprise me. it's only this patricular act which reminds me of not good electronic music from germany, like ten years ago or so.

Actually samples of this sound pretty cool and - to me - not at all like what you're describing.

Like, who are the specific artists that fit into this "not good electronic music from germany, like ten years ago or so"?

And what are some examples of good electronic music to come out of Germany lately?

Yeah, it sounds like berliner is talking about an entirely different artist. I don't know how you can listen to Black Noise and objectively call it 'cheesy'.

Goddammit, I feel like I'm putting my foot in my mouth left and right here. The first two samples I listened to were really cool, and the next four were really predictable, cheesy, average techno.

Well, at any rate, "Abglanz" and "Bohemian Stars" are pretty cool tracks.

I knew you would ask... it was just an impression I had because of the beats. this straight bass-hihat-bass-hihat stuff, that's like music from these german techno veterans, väth for example.
I don't know names of the good acts, I like the minimal or not house/techno based things here, but maybe it's the difference between club music and at-home-music.

I just don't get the 'cheesy' part. If you think it's average, that's one thing, but cheesy?

nothing on the album is predictable, cheesy, or average.

Well "cheesy" is always pretty subjective.

Mostly it just sounds really ordinary. Or just not that interesting.

He may change things up fairly often, but after a while the sound of this record starts to feel fairly uniform, based on the parts I've listened to so far. That's about 8 tracks.

there are pedestrian passages on that album, same as there are some memorable moments. i think the success of it is that it's mostly pretty enjoyable, made of sounds we've already accepted as "good".

Good to see that I won't be the only one giving Owen Pallett and Xiu Xiu some love. I'd encourage everyone to give the Owen Pallett a chance, it's really very good.

I get why people might be turned off from Xiu Xiu but this album is definitely their most accessible.

I think I might even like it more than their last one, but of course it's too early to tell.

A wee bit tired of this hobby, but i'm bored tonight.

1. Len Price 3 - Pictures (A really progressive band, "Jack In The Greens" & "Keep Your Eye On Me", quality songs)
2. Drive-By Truckers - The Big To-Do
3. Shonen Knife - Free Time (Make me smile, the addictive "Capybara" my standout)
4. Pierced Arrows - Descending Shadows
5. Overnight Lows - City Of Rotton Eyes
6. Acid Eaters - Black Fuzz On Wheels (I love this shit, seriously distorted guitar fuzz, mad professor farfisa)

7. Hamid Drake & Bindu - Reggaeology
8. Jason & The Scorchers - Halcyon Times
9. Jose James - Black Magic (A real disappointment)
10. Jack Rose - Luck In The Valley ( I dig "Woodpiles on The Side Of The Road", need more listens)
11. Carolina Chocolate Drops - Genuine Negro Jig (Genuine?)

Looking forward to:

MV & EE - Home Comfort
Screaming Females - Singles
The Chieftains(featuring Ry Cooder)- San Patricio
