I too am headed to Portland in late September for a week and wanted some advice on places to see

actually, this question is for anyone that knows the area

that Gooney's rock on the beach looks cool, there's supposedly a nice scenic drive along the coast.

did you you go see Mt. Hood or Mt. St. Helens while you where there?

someone I know recommended a river cruise and "apple picking" but eh, idk

what did you like in town?

haystack rock is cool. there are lots of little eateries and drinking holes along the beach. i did not see the volcano

miss d and rparis would be great resources for suggestions as well. i'll ask erin too, she just moved in from there

if you are just here for a weekend, I'd spend one day just hanging out around town and one day doing something in the local area. you can find all sorts of articles if you just google Portland...here are a few below. also the portland visitors association has some good stuff: http://www.travelportland.com/

there are quite a few cool natural destinations with an hour and a half - Mt. Helens is pretty cool, Mt. Hood area for some hiking, the Columbia River Gorge (especially in the fall you could hit up the Hood River Valley)...wine country is about 30-45 minutes southwest of town...you can hit various areas along the northern coast...anywhere between Tillamook (3 capes scenic loop) up to Cannon Beach is cool.
