Wow, lots of love for the Bare Jr. album. Is it significantly better than his other stuff? I've always found him to be hit or miss.

This is another I haven't heard yet. All the praise kind of put me off it.

I put it down for a few weeks to let it cool off a bit, but have been playing it again this week and it's actually better than my first impressions for two reasons:

1. IMHO, BBJ's albums have always been a little front loaded or inconsistent in the quality songs department but I think this one stays pretty strong throughout. Not every song is a Big Winner but then again there aren't a lot of moments where it falls off a cliff either.

2. The MMJ-as-a-backing band aspect. I think I mentioned this to you on Facebook, but it is a huge positive for me and I think relating back to #1, the muscle of the music carries what might otherwise be some of the more borderline songs into "fucking awesome" territory.

So yeah, it's a top 5, top 3, top whatever for me.

I keep forgetting to download this and give it a shot. I'll do that tonight and report back tomorrow sometime.

These have a reasonable chance at Top 3 or 5.

Young Rival Young Rival
Kings of Leon Come Around Sundown
Flash Lightin' Flash Lightnin'

Of course The Arcade Fire will probably be number 1.

For the guys that dig the J roddy, do you just ignore the piano? Or have i just never heard a rock 'n' roll pianist before.

The Ariel Pink has grown and grown on me too... it is a contender for best of the year, but does take some time to appreciate. It seems superficial, facile pop-deconstruction at first but there's a real heart beating in that darkness. The Joanna Newsom in unlistenable.

It's not unlistenable at all.

Many people have, in fact, listened to it.

I completely agree with this. It's been wonderful "backroad open throttle" driving to work music.

I was struggling to get out of bet this morning, looking for new music. I decided to sum up this thread to figure out the Obner Collective Top 5 of the Year

Top Album Votes:

National - 5
Bobby Bare Jr - 3
J Roddy - 3
Joanna Newsom - 3
Wild Nothing - 2

Interestingly enough, the only 3 people to include Joanna Newsom or Wild Nothing had them as their top album, so it seemed to be all or nothing with them

Total Votes (min 2):
J Roddy - 7
National - 7
Arcade Fire - 5
Beach House - 5
Bobby Bare Jr - 5
Black Keys - 4
Big Boi - 3
Joanna Newsom - 3
Tame Impala - 3
Walkmen - 3
Caribou - 2
Deerhunter - 2
Deftones - 2
Drive By Truckers - 2
Gorillaz - 2
Jonsi - 2
Josh Ritter - 2
LCD Soundsystem - 2
Mary Guthier - 2
Roky Erickson & Okkervil River - 2
Titus Andonicus - 2
Wild Nothing - 2

There's different ways to take the data and make a Top 5 selection from this, but eyeballing it I have it as this:

#1 - The National - The most #1 votes makes this easy, as well as most votes overall
Image
#2 - J Roddy - Again, easy to choose, most votes overall and second in top votes
Image
#3 - Bobby Bare Jr - 3 top votes, and second most votes overall
Image
#4 - Joanna Newsom - Although lacking in total votes, 3 top votes was enough to earn her #4
Image
#5 - Have to use a tie, with Arcade Fire and Beach House

Forgot about this too.... a great sound, and that bizarre Scandinavian ability to simply NAIL a pop musical idea.

You now have assumed the Shmoo mantle... and I look forward to seeing the Shmoo-Wilked Poll process in place in January.

as far as near-perfect albums this year, the only one that takes that title for me is Wild Nothing. start to finish, the tracks flow perfectly, borrow from the past while looking towards the future, have sentimental value (for me), real emotion, perfect production for the style, and each and every song is just so great.

I totally agree. I love this album and I've played the hell out of it this year and it just doesn't seem to tire.

It'll be top 5 for me, by years end.
