Finally got a chance to watch a couple of movies since the wife and I were sick over the weekend.

The Social Network. See above comments on this page. Good movie. I did find the soundtrack a little distracting and a little too overtly Trent Reznor at times. The times when it worked best was when it didn't sound like him.

Zombieland. Really fun movie. I prefer this to Shaun of the Dead, probably.

Zach Galifianakis: Live at the Purple Onion. I think I'm done with this guy. I laughed a couple of times.

Anyone see Blue Valentine yet? It's really depressing but Gosling & Williams give amazing performances.

Saw this today---whoa, that's a rough watch but you're right. Gosling and Williams were fantastic. Probably my two favorite performances of the year. Gosling got screwed with no Oscar nom. And the fact that Portman is going to take the award over Michelle Williams is a joke. Not even close.

check out Scarlet Street if you haven't seen it. kind of a sister to that, both with Robinson, Bennett and directed by Lang

Somewhere - This was fine, but nothing really happened. Hollywood actor is unfulfilled by his privileged lifestyle until his daughter comes along, and they do things like eat breakfast and play rock band together.

Dinner for Schmucks - I was invited to come watch this, and I did, against my better judgement. It was God-awful.

Wish this would've been longer. 40 mins just seemed too short. Ever the exclamation point on irony, they spend all those 40 minutes gushing how no one recognized his talent, but still couldn't fill 2 hours. I guess only making 5 films makes it tough.

Still, I highly admire Cazale, and definitely think its great that people are talking about his legacy on film.

Good but not great. Some scenes did not ring true. The female lead was very good. What a life. Bleak & blech.

I still need to see The Fighter - 127 Hours - Kings Speech to complete the list of 10.

Biutiful is another on the list.

The Wife and I have resolved to stop failing during the week and flipping through rando BS and try to watch some movies again. Campaign season is over and the baby goes down at 7:30,so we should have the time (as long as I don't fall asleep half way through).

First up is Social Network and Easy A.

I think the key with Netflix is to try to get movies you actually want to and will watch, and not try to get "important" films per se.

To a certain degree, out of fear I can see why these women would protect their boyfriends/husbands that run the METH MOB. It seemed a little over the top.
After beating the lead senseless in the barn cos they had had enough of her snooping around, why would they then, feel sorry for her, go get her and a chainsaw and head out to a swamp to cut the hands off the lead characters father, so she'll have proof he's dead, thus enabling her to keep the house. Dunno, rings false. That whole scenario is very crucial to the story. I'm mean it works n all, I'm just nitpicking here.

There are other things I really liked about the film. The lead was great. Was she nominated? I liked the music. Some people have complained that it was too slow. I found it deliberate with a good rhythm that puts you in that world.

Fwiw - I liked it much more than Black Swan and is a Top Fiver of the year.

I understand where you coming from. For me, I took it as....when the lead finally poured her heart out in the barn, their maternal instincts took over. Prior to that, they were caught in the stay away from my man mode.

We've gotten into this routine and it's been nice. 4 out of 5 nights a week, we deal with Teh Babgee until 8, then crack open the beer / wine / ice cream, and sit down to netflix. Thursday night we usually watch tv instead. Now a good portion of the time, we'll get halfway through a flick and decide to pause it for tomorrow because we're both nodding off, and that's no big deal. Also if we get part-way into something and find that neither of us is into it, we'll just seal it up and return it.

The Blue Angel. the description on comcast's info bar is a little misleading, but ultimately turns out to be somewhat accurate. anyway, this is about a college professor whose students are frequenting a seedy nightclub. he goes there to confront them. (this is germany in the 1920s, so i guess that's realistic.) he meets the star of the show, lola lola, who's played by a very young marlene dietrich. he becomes enamored with her and... it becomes rather predictable from there. emil jannings really kills it as the professor. in the last 15 minutes he totally sells a man falling apart from humiliation, jealousy, rage, regret, etc. marlene dietrich is pretty raw here, but i understand why she became a star. this is pretty good, but i don't know if i'd call it essential.

Why? An Aaron Sorkin penned movie directed by David Fincher wouldn't appeal to me because..?

As I said, we're trying to wade back into the pool of watching flicks, not go directly to Nouvelle Vague Cinema Français. Just because you pretend to like bad movies to impress people doesn't mean I need to. :P

You guys are better men than us.

We try to get the girls down around 7:45. They actually go down around 8:30. By that point, it's all we can do to clean up, eat dinner and stay awake for 30 minutes.

I just know you. WAY too much praise being given to that movie for you to enjoy it.

I can already hear your head eviscerating every detail with arms folded.

That said, I think you'll enjoy the epic rat fucking that goes on in it.

Nobody in it is "Michael Cerasque".

Cera has never played a cold, ruthless, unlikable, know-it-all asshole geek, to my knowledge.

I meant in the sense that Eisenberg plays unassuming, wussy, nerdy types in a style similar to Cera. Cera himself has said that he keeps getting asked if he is Jesse Eisenberg since the release of the Social Network.

Otherwise, I agree with you that this is an unlikeable character, which Cera plays the opposite of. But I liked the movie and previously stated that I had no complaints about it. I'm just guessing why Gar might not like it.

I actually really enjoyed Adventureland. It was a little facile, and indie by numbers, but I like coming of age movies (especially about getting hammered and fucking).
