Sharks - Jab It Yore Eye

Image

After playing with John Cale and Harry Nilsson and before producing the Sex Pistols demos, ace guitarist Chris Spedding started this short-lived band with a singer known only as Snips. The band was originally formed with bassist Andy Fraser (of Free), but on this album Fraser is replaced by Busta "Cherry" Jones, fresh off his work with Eno on Here Come The Warm Jets (he'd later show up as part of the extended version of Talking Heads). Jab It In Yore Eye was Shark's second album, and, considering the personnel, it's an oddly organic sounding critter, more mellow Americana than glam (although, somehow, there's still shards of glam in there). Snips vocals are from the gruff Joe Cocker/Paul Rodgers school of white blues belters, and Spedding holds back the flash in favor of restraint. A surprisingly good obscurity that some here will really appreciate.

Not sure that sounds up my alley, but I am fond of some of Chris Spedding's work with Robert Gordon. Will probably at least give this one a listen.

Raspberries - Starting Over

Image

Known primarily for a string of early '70s hits that coupled Beatlesesque hooks with Who-like power chords ("Go All The Way" and "Tonight"), in '74 the Raspberries wanted to be taken more seriously. They ditched the matching leisure suits, brought in Lennon-soundalike Scott McCarl and crazed drummer Michael McBride, and proceeded to define the term "power pop". They still owe a lot to their sources ("Don't Know What I Want" is the Who, "Cruisin' Music" is the Beach Boys), but it all seems to work within the context of a larger whole. Even when Eric Carmen's innate schmaltz starts to make an appearance on the string-laden title track, he undercuts it with a well placed "fuck". Great stuff all around. It didn't make Borack's #1 spot in the Top 200 Power Pop Albums list for nothing.

Only link I could find is from the Goldenbrown77 blog, and it's the Power Pop Vol. 2 collection which compiles Starting Over with the previous album Side 3. Not sure if you need both parts to unzip, but I imagine Starting Over is on part 2.

I like Randy Newman - Good Old Boys, John Cale - Fear, the Shuggie Otis, Jackson Browne - Late for the Sky, and Van Morrison - Veedon Fleece a lot. My favorites not mentioned yet are Leonard Cohen - New Skin for the Old Cemetary, Jorge Ben - A Tabua de Esmeralda, Willie Nelson - Phases and Stages, James Brown - Hell, and James Brown - The Payback. If you're inclined to like those though, you probably already know them.

So I'll go for a nice little country rock obscurity:

Rick Cunha - Cunha Songs

Rick Cunha got his start as a guitarist and vocalist in the late 60's West Coast country rock band, Hearts and Flowers*. He left after their first of two albums and moved to Nashville where he joined Emmylou Harris' Hot Band. He also recorded two solo albums in the 70's which Cunha Songs is the first of. Waylon Jennings was a fan and sings back up vocals on the album. The album includes the song "Yo Yo Man" which was covered by Plainsong (the country fock band started by Ian Matthews of the Fairport Convention).

Not my link but this is where I found it a few months back (a decent vinyl rip):

*Hearts and Flowers are well worth checking out too. As a sidenote, they were formed by guitarist Larry Murray who got his start in the Scottsville Squirrel Barkers, a 50's bluegrass band that also featured a teenage Chris Hillman and a young Bernie Leadon. Leadon replaced Cunha in Hearts and Flowers on guitar for their second album.

Totally did not realize The Payback was 74. I tend to like a lot of the earlier James Brown soul stuff, but from his funk era, The Payback is pretty well by far my favorite and as far as something that holds together for the whole album it has gotta be about the best thing he ever did in my opinion.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Grievous Angel or Fulfillingness' First Finale yet. Or did I miss them?

I just looked at what I owned from 1974 according to rateyourmusic. Grievous Angel didn't show up because I own the GP/Grievous Angel twofer which had a later release date but I'd definitely add it to my favorites from 1974. I probably own and really like a bunch of stuff of 1974 which I don't realize is from 1974 for similar reasons.

FFF is a very good album. Not one of my absolute favorites though and also something I figured would be well enough known anyway but sure its a good one deserving of a mention.

I figured those out by looking at one of those 1,001 albums you must hear before you die lists. They were the best of several not already mentioned. I decided I didn't need to bring up the self-titled by Bad Company.

There has been a nice mix of mainstream/well known classics, more underground classics and then some really pretty obscure things. Good stuff so far guys. I need to download the things that I didn't have. I still want to post a thing or two later, glad the thread pretty much worked.

Yeah, great idea. Please keep it up. But not more often than once a week, so that we can all keep up with the new stuff to listen to.

I thought we were working within a loosely based parameter for these. I certainly would have mentioned both Phases & Stages and Grievous Angel.

finally getting a chance to sort in itunes and unless i've incorrect tags (highly possible), there are quite a few classics not yet mentioned: Roxy Music - Country Life; Neil Young - On The Beach; Gene Clark - No Other.

maybe a little less well known, but great albums nonetheless:

maybe a little more stinky than people want:

and a few terrific afrobeat albums:

Mars Hotel might be my least favorite Dead studio album, and let's face it, that's a pretty fucking huge feat. Herculean even.

While I am generally not a fan of the band, I can't help singing along to "Black Water" by the Doobie Brothers whenever it's on the radio (the whole song, not just the Dixieland/pretty mama part at the end).

Charles Hilton Brown - Owed to Myself

Don't know much about this guy other than he was apparently in the military stationed in Italy and recorded this album backed by a UK afrobeat band, Assagai. It's all covers, but he's got a great voice and the band plays a tight mix of soul, funk and jazz.

This will give you a sense of his sound:

and not my link but you can grab the whole album here:
