I was just listening to Failure the other day. Certainly not forgotten in my book...

I was going to say maybe Prefab Sprout or Love and Rockets, but I could be wrong.

If they are it's a sad day for the human race. Next people will say they don't remember The The or Squeeze. Ain't right, I tell ya.

For some reason I think I saw that Colossal Youth was being re-released or just had been or some such... so not completely forgotten (but surely underloved)

You know, I used to really like RLYL, but I pulled out some of their stuff over the weekend and I can kind of see how they ended up forgotten. I liked them more when I didn't listen.

I don't know the music of Fatima Mansions, but I used to live just down the road from the housing project in question.

Big Dipper-Craps and Heavens are the 2 quintessential Boston indie records of the late 80's. (yeah..I know..The Pixies)

Pale Saints-Comforts of Madness and In Ribbons are the = or > so many much more lauded UK albums .

The Marshes-Along with the Wrens, victims of a corrupt Indie label. Grass Records. 4 albums. The 2nd "Fledgling" should have vaulted them into the same league as Green Day and Jawbreaker. See www.amazon.com for other opinions. Oh yeah, my brother was in this band.

Smoking Popes-Destination Failure is one of the greatest records ever made. Duvall carries the torch. Morrissey loves em' too.

And while we're talking Boston late 80s/early 90s (with mentions of Scruffy the Cat, BimSkalaBim and Treat Her Right)...let's not forget:

Did anyone say
The Wipers?

(I only have one album, and am not crazy about it, but I hear that a lot of their other stuff is pretty amazing.)

Which album do you have?

Their early 80's stuff is pretty terrific, then they had a rough time of it only to recover a bit in the 90's. Actually shouldn't even say "they" because it's pretty much always been just Sage.

All indie bands, great or not, will eventually be forgotten...

If you don't think some kid was out there in the late 60's out_Sgt. Peppering the Beatles after hearing Pet Sounds himself, but couldn't get signed/label attention because he was from Idaho (or some other hinderance) and never released anything in enough of a mass market environment to get noticed, you're cheating yourself. I mean, over half of the bands mentioned are ones that I will never hear, and there are a lot that have been mentioned that I just never liked...

It's only the corporate $ that will make sure, through reissues/song placement in movies/ etc., that some bands are remembered while others are forgotten...

Can't remember the name of it, but it has a cartoon-ish drawing of the Earth, as seen from outer space on the cover.

I think you have The Herd which is a 90's album that I don't have. Their early stuff is much better but I believe hard to find nowadays. If you want to give them another shot try their 1990 comp.
