Ha! Falling is always funny. The tree is busting out and lifting that sidewalk up a few inches. I bet it happens all the time at this spot.

Regarding those album covers with the missing dead people. I was tempted to do Minutemen's three way tie but as soon as I opened it in pshop I got waay too sad about it.

Wow. End of an era in Texas. Dublin, TX Dr. Pepper plant is closing. Making it the same way (mostly) for 120 years.

As they should be. The author of that blog posting cited that only ~1% of Dr. Pepper was produced there. Incredible. Wish there was some way that the state of Texas could deem it historical or a landmark.

Totally! Because classifying a building as historical instantly causes whatever business occurs inside the building to be profitable and worth continuing. I'm consistently amazed that more states don't do this. Imagine what Detroit would look like if we'd known about this 20 years ago.

Or maybe they shouldn't do it because the people that work there helped the company make $300 million in profits in the last 6 months.

Sure, if you think Pepsi should keep an unprofitable factory on line because it provides jobs and has historical significance, that's... something you might think. But Texas preserving the factory has nothing to do with that, unless we're talking about Texas literally paying a multinational corporation to sustain a failing corner of its business, which, really?

I don't think Pepsi will making any decisions regarding Dr. Pepper since they don't own the brand.

I was talking about preserving the building so that it could become more than an empty warehouse, not necessarily preserving the business.

Depends on who wants what, and how badly. If Texas wants the jobs, and is willing to chip in somehow financially, and that $ offsets whatever money Dr Pepper is losing by operating out of that spot (compared to relocation), then it would balance out. I'm not saying one or the other is right because I don't know shit about it, but let's not just say carte blanche that localities have NO reason to toss any amount of money whatsoever at companies. It can go WAY too far, but again I'm just arguing the principle, not the specifics here. Or, in short, I saw a lot of characterization in that argument up there, and that's usually a clue that not all of it is as reported. "Failing," "unprofitable," etc. To what degree, compared to what, etc. Did they make $300M profit in the last 6 months, or are they a giant cash sinkhole? Can't be both.

The other possibility is that what is killing business and the middle class in our country is over-reliance on actuarials and number crunching, and under emphasis on bad fucking PR moves. It would probably make more sense over the course of time to continue the Dublin DP as a loss leader and not take the hit to the brand.

Yes, I know, Loog the fucking hippie talking about community awareness over the almighty dollar, but it does seem a bot short-sighted to me to kill the last vestige of your original product in the name of squeezing a few more bucks out for your CEO's golden parachute.

And, having actually been to the factory (recovering Dr. Pepper addict) I wonder what the overall footprint of producing Dublin DP nets the city, county, etc in terms of tourist dollars, taxes, etc. If those #s are >$1, then yes, in fact, it makes sense for the state, city, county, or whatever, to subsidize keeping it open. (Let us NEVER speak of the inherent creep of socialism, or really, fascism, that this type of incentive actually represents - it creates jobs, and jobs are good, RIGHT Elizabeth Warren?)

LOOKOUT! IST KAPUTT.

I’ve been getting a lot of Twitter questions about why a bunch of my records have disappeared from all the digital services (Sportify, iDudes, Mandora, etc.). It’s because our beloved Lookout Records, which ceased releasing new material in 2006, but carried on keeping the catalog in print until this past December, has, sadly, shuttered it’s windows for good. A better eulogy should be forthcoming, but just to answer these questions, this means that these records have reverted to my complete ownership, which is kind of cool in some ways, I guess, except that it also means I have to basically run my own label for them now unless I wind up licensing them to someone else in the future. In the immediate, I have to go through some legal stuff with the digital services to get the records back up online, and I’m hoping to have that all taken care of very soon. Physical records are now officially out of print and will likely not be repressed for a while (but I’m sure I’ll get around to it eventually). I do have a bunch of stock laying around with no plans to tour for quite a while, so if there’s interest, maybe I’ll set up a web-store so you can buy direct from me if you want. Please feel free to email or tweet me with ideas for that. All entertaining ideas will be entertained!
And thank you, seriously, for giving a crap. I’m not happy to see Lookout gone, but having complete rights of usage and total and direct revenue from sales now, can ultimately turn this into a positive situation. I just have to get creative about it. Might try to bang one out more special Tyranny of Distance event before the 10th anniversary year is over this spring…

Wow. I follow him on Twitter and hadn't caught that...which is surprising because he tweets a lot. I hope he does some cool stuff with releases. This just makes me wonder what going to happen to stuff like Op Ivy, Avail, etc.
