You will have to have some serious evidence to convince me that this didn't play a big part. Remember when you first started posting Cap'n and that other weirdo came around? You were leaving a trail most of us do not leave. Of this, I am convinced.

I use my own computer, password protected, mostly for this very reason.

And yeah, this is some serious bullshit. I love how they probably have no policy against any of this shit, but can enforce what they want on an adhoc basis. If Maddy is so liberal, how come y'all ain't Union?

it would probably be worth it to find the subnet of the place where our man used to work and block it too.

Your office router most likely records every website ip address, along with the domain name, and the computer on the network that accessed said website.

They can monitor you at the hub, and don't need to get into your machine.

Sincerely,
Your local neighborhood networking nerd.

Hehe, but I own the router. And I am the only person here, so unless some weird shit went down, I think *hope* I'm ok.

Would "weird shit" include 3 or 4 gigabytes of prego porn like your homeboy got busted for having?

See here's the thing about that... I really don't feel like his buttons were pushed. I didn't like his image, and said so. I called it "crap." I hotlinked to it. That's it. No mention of anybody's Mamma, no bad language from me, and I think I responded to him twice, total. There were WAY worse comments from others. I started it, yes, but I didn't stoke the fire much once it was going. You make it sound like I dared him to do something.

You've got to use common sense, but you also can't go through life never calling anyone out because you're afraid they might retaliate. Cap didn't wrong this guy in any way. This dude got upset because others goofed on him and unfortunately he took it out on Cap. That's not a slam on those that might have egged him on. The dude is nuts, whatcha gonna do?

you did, by calling it crap.

that dude got WAY offended and irrational, but you -did- start it.

I still call it crap. Criticisms on aesthetic grounds shouldn't get one fired - except for that sub-par designer himself.

i'm not saying he -wronged- the guy, but the blame can't be placed on others....Cap'n started the thread. if the thread didn't exist in the first place, he wouldn't be in this situation.

not attacking you Cap'n, just tellin' it like i see it.

also if the anything goes forum didn't exist, they would have had no case, unless he was posting during regular hours and not mostly on his lunch like he says.

Edit: I think the Cap'n should claim to be gay and that is why they fired him. I'd sleep with him so we win a huge settlement.

Edit 2: on second thought, I volounteer Chris. :P

First off, I am absolutely appalled to hear about this. Really, really, really sorry and I totally feel for you. It's just so completely fucked, how else can you talk about it than in terms unbelievable?

So...I'll be the first to ask, not because I think it's the best solution, but only because we haven't id'd a better one yet - should we consider making Obner password-protected? I doubt we'd lose much traffic - because really, think about it - and it would certainly cover lots of tracks. I, for one, post here and maybe 2-3 other places, but nowhere near as frequently as I do here (and 1 of those places has a "guest" feature that doesn't make viewing IP addresses or tracking usernames possible).

Like I said, I'm not committed to supporting the idea through to implementation, but I think a discussion about finding a solution is justified.

Sorry again Cap'n.

KPH

This story is insane. I'm so sorry to here about how it all turned out.

Having totally missed the thread where all of this originally took place... I must say I'm slightly confused about what happened exactly.

Did you post a link to his site which he then traced back through his site's web stats? (Or did he find Obner in a different way?)

Did he post on Obner? If so can any random lurker just become a member? Do we want to curb that?

It's all kind of spooky.

Fellow computer nerds... isn't there an option to make viewing threads password protected?

Should we be a gated community?

That's some nice image manipulation, polly.

The software allows us to limit registration and viewing to those we know. Notwithstanding concerns about future firings, I really dislike the idea. Even if we did it, it means no one gets in unless they have good references, and members can't browse when they're logged out. As spooky as this situation was, I think that in general nobody needs to worry about anything like this unless they're making the kind of direct and incriminating references to their work that Cap'n did.

EDIT: what Cap'n did, polly, was post an image (using the [img] tag) from the website of an affiliate of the company he worked for. We made fun of the image. The creator, viewing their site's stats, saw that someone was linking to his image from here. He found the thread and went apeshit.

I've seen something similar happen before on another board, but it still amazes me how far someone will take an internet fight, especially when even a hint of politics is involved.

I hope you recover from this bullshit incident.

My God Cap'n... I feel so sorry for you. It's re-goddman-diculous. I too, have seen board wars carried out to frightening lenghts... but this takews the cake.

Keep your head up.

You have my sympathies, Cap'n.

I, too, have been fired from a (shitty) job because of something I posted on a message board a few years ago. It was really stupid and completely irresponsible and immature on my part. I learned from it, and I'm more careful now. Well, at least a little bit. I still post sometimes from work, but this is a pretty good reminder that I should probably cut that out entirely.

Still, what you did is nowhere near as blatant or directly self-incriminating as what I did, and this whole thing is pretty surprising. This is some of the craziest shit I've ever heard of.

That really sucks, man. Best of luck with the job search.

With that said, hopefully everyone will realize the danger of surfing the web at work and/or making negative comments about work in a public forum. It's just not worth it.

Linking to a picture on someone else's web page is a bad idea. I have had people do it to me, and I'll replace it with something... bad... so that they get the message.

It's a good way to start an internet fight.

But taking it into real life crosses the line in a big way. Whoever did that is a horrible, horrible person.
