If you are getting it down within the correct pixel range (120 by 120 I think) and are still over, then it might because of format, as in bitmap instead of jpg. Bitmaps waste tons of space.

Okay, tried it again this morning, avatars working now. I'll try it again tonight, maybe it's only a night-time thing that it's a problem.

PS I'm tired of my cartoony avatar, too, I'll switch back to the emu.

Explanation of emu: someone sent me a picture of myself "the morning after", and when I saw the emu, it kind of reminded me of that picture.

when i sat down at my first Mac back when i was 8 or so, i would always use the art program, make a brick wall and do bad graffiti.

someone on hipinion put up a brick wall and said, "do cool graffiti on this"

so i joined in and did a slight update on my 8 year old style using the same word i used back then, "rap!"

then i added Carlos Santana giving a peace sign, even though my name refers to the dip set artist Juelz Santana.

My avatar = The late, great Vivian Stanshall, lead singer for the Bonzo Dog Band in a typically bizarre pose. I use it because it's funny and weird and creeps some people out. Kinda like me.

I went with this nice lil squirrel when avatar hosting got turned off (and the terrorists had temporarily won), and now he just sorta looks right.

Just watched a Lilian Gish film the other night---very nice.

My avatar: Johnny Depp as Ed Wood. I just love the crazy look in his eyes in that shot of him. He really captures the caricature of a mad artist type: big ideas and dreams, totally unaware and unconcerned by whether or not his stuff is actually good. ...And for some reason the title of that Ed Wood movie "Glen or Glenda" makes me laugh uncontrolably every time I say or hear it.

A nice mixture of spooky and silly.
