Loog just made a good point. I like a few of Waits' songs, but not his versions. Frank Black and the Ramones come to mind.

Then there's "Downtown Train". Though I prefer Waits to Stewart, I'd like to see someone like Robert Earl Keen or Warren Zevon [RIP] or even Marc Cohn sing it.

I'd rather listen to Mark Lanegan than Tom Waits.

Seriously, take "Heart of Saturday Night" &/or "Nighthawks .." out for a test drive. I think you might find a few nuggets of charm on those records. Borrow, steal, but don't buy.

I've wanted to like/appreciate Waits for years but just havent; what ive heard is ok.

I think that I would with the right guidance. I'm pretty fucking open minded (unlike the Sen.)

Maybe Derris or somebody will hook a brother up.

You've got a point, I've been accused of overthinking in other aspects of my career, my leisure activities it would seem, are not exempt. Trying too hard to objectively judge art is sort of pointless. Based on your approval/disappointment metric, another example is Captain Beefheart. I do NOT get it after hearing it maybe a half dozen times. I think it flat out sucks.

I can only listen to Beefheart if I imagine it is being played by Muppets.

i'm pretty hit or miss on a lot of Waits, but one cannot deny the fucking genius of "Anywhere I Lay My Hat", "I Don't Wanna Grow Up", "The Piano's Been Drinking", Jersey Girl", "Romeo Is Bleeding", "Jockey Full of Bourbon", "Train Song", and "Fall of Troy". There's a lot of his stuff that i loathe, too, but those songs keep him in the black with me.

i will YSI some of these to anyone who needs convincing.

I'm also skeptical as to whether or not he's ever really listened to that Jackie-O Motherfucker album.
i voted those kinks albums 2 because i was being generous, i think that they're really, really awful. however, that jackie-o album i just thought was a good idea that didn't pan out. it's the one in the cardboard case, right? because you're not the only motherfucker on here who's ever heard stuff.

Hey, I just had my doubts 'cuz it's been OOP for a few years now, and there were only ever a few thousand copies out there. Of course you or anybody else could have downloaded it, but I had the general impression from previous times that I'd mentioned them on here that no one had really heard much of them or gave a shit.

Also, at least 4 of their albums come in cardboard cases. Fig. 4 is the one with the bone on the cover, and it folds up weirdly on the back. It's actually one of the cooler package designs I've seen except for the total lack of any CD-holding apparatus. The disc was just loosely thrown in there.

Sorry, got the date wrong. It was released in 2000.

Anyway, yes, it was recorded way back in 1975 but remained unreleased for 25 years. Great record though.

That's what I didn't know and answers the question.

The 2000/2001 nitpick wasn't my issue, I just found it strange they had a record out that recently.

I don't like Waits either but I'm not going to rate any of his albums because I have no desire to listen to them.

I've been a little too generous with my ratings so far.

Yeah, considering the whole them being dead or insane thing right.

I used to work with this dude who was obsessed with Badfinger. like, had talked to surviving members and was researching doing a book on them after he finished his book on cats...

There's already a definitive biography out about the group. It is probably the saddest story in rock music. I think VH1 stopped airing the BtM after only two spins because of how damned sad it is

yeah, this bastard used to depress the shit out of me recounting their various histories.

we worked early in the morning preping at a restaraunt, i was usually hungover, and not really in the mood but he was my boss so i didnt really have much say.

yeah man, sad. pretty decent tunes though.

I like Safe As Milk but everything past that sucks in my opinion espcially Trout Mask Replica.

Oh I think y'all need to just quit your damn whining and complaining. If you don't like the charts then good for you, don't friggin participate, but frankly there's been more musical fucking discussions on this board in the last two days then I've seen in months.

Maybe it being here just woke up most people's damn brains or something, I don't know.

But don't it ruin it for the rest of us who actually happen to enjoy it.

Just shut up or put out.

(all said with love of course)

I can already tell that Trout Mask Replica is going to be controversial. Also, what do people like about Speakerboxxx/The Love Below so much? There are a few good songs on each album buried underneath so much utter trash.

I like the Big Boi disc, but hate the Dre disc.

Another thing I'll never understand is the love for OK Computer. I absolutely love the Bends and Amnesiac, and like Kid A a lot, but I have never liked this album much. It's got a few excellent songs, but the sequencing is awful, and the second half drags quite a bit. I'd give it a 5 out of 10 at best.

OK, so I have to know why billyg gave Kind of Blue a 2. It's especially puzzling since we have similar ratings on a lot of other things and also because he really likes Sunday at the Village Vanguard.

I like OK Comp alot, especially Climbing up the walls and Exit Music, but yeah it doesn't compare to Kid A, Amnesiac or The Bends
