Finally saw In Bruges. I must have paused it 10 times thanks to a teething, crying infant. I have been pissing away money at Netflix lately.

Saw Waltz with Bashir last week. Absolute trash. Even though I'm fairly cowardly and the director is an ex Israeli commando, I'd still have punched in the face if he'd been standing at the exit.

The thing is, try finding a bad review of this movie; you can't. Oh it's anti-war it must be brilliant! Only one reviewer I've read raised 'some concern' about the abhorrent nature of this film and he still gave it 4 out of 5.

Barrel scrapping, exploitative, cheap, nasty, deluded film making that looks good, hence the good reviews. There are bad movies and there are movies that should never have been made and I wish I'd seen a bad movie.

So... what's the big deal? I mean, can you give examples of what's "barrel scraping" and "exploitative" about it? I haven't seen it, and probably wasn't planning to, but based on what you've said vs. the universally positive reviews, I'm a little curious. I actually don't like the look and style of the animation, though, and probably wouldn't see it just based on that. I really hate that "puppet" style of 2D animation, and this is like some sort of bad cross between that and the Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly stuff.

Okay--my least favorite of the newer ones so far. Of course, my opinions on these tend to change with mulitple viewings.

dvd player went down and i reverted back to vcr. . . had this on tape and i watched it again last night. yes, it's got some of the john hughes trademarks, but it's quieter and more efficient (i guess, if you didn't like it, one could call it slow). i, for one, enjoy quiet movies that don't barrel through their stories.

and it's got the john hughes iii's trademark of having great music with a score by john mcentire and songs from the sea & cake, polvo, dianogah, tortoise, and bundy k brown.

Just finished it.
Not bad for a silent film about Robots.
There was a 70's sci-fi/horror movie vibe to the film without it being scary.
It could have used a bit more music.

i definitely enjoyed this but it seemed to come together too cleanly and neatly to really justify all this award talk that it seems to be getting. Penn was good but I was really impressed with the other gaybos in the cast, Franco and Hirsch in particular, whom I've never really cared for before.

Mad Max

Really interesting movie. There's definitely something "off" about it (apparently it's supposed to be a post-apocalyptic setting?) though they never mention it in the movie as far as i know.

very bleak and not a whole lot of dialogue, but still entertaining. the stunts aren't "holy shit!" but at the same time they look more realistic than the modern stuff.

i'll watch road warrior tonight, perhaps.

I just saw the Road Warrior a week or so ago. It was on cable but even with commercials I ended up watching the whole thing. I hadn't seen it in probably 15 years.

I really liked this, thought the performances were great, thought the tete-a-tete was interesting, and don't really understand some of the middling reviews that it's been getting compared to the other oscar-bait movies. . I haven't seen everything this year but this was close to the top for me (so far).

Asassination of Jesse James - Really good and way better than I expected. Should have been hyped more.

A friend of mine recently told me he wouldn't take any more movie recommendations from me after I suggested that he check this out. :?

I didn't love it, but I thought it was pretty solid.

Fate. Chance. Luck.

I just saw my favorite movie of 2008 yesterday. Highly recommended, director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later) does it again.

Loved it. I'm not a fan of Kaufman (until now), but I'm a big fan of Philip Seymour Hoffman. Walking out of the theater, I heard the people in front of us telling someone "that was the worst movie ever made" repeatedly...the woman behind us told her friend "Wow, you really know how to pick them."

saw this last night. incredible. ebert's review was really good, too--rather than running the plot and describing performances he goes with what it's like to watch it. given that it's kaufman, he probably picked the easier route

I really want to see that. One user review I read of SNY said something like it was the worst movie the person had seen since "Dogtown", and I can only assume she meant Dogville, which my wife and I both really liked, rather than the skateboarding movie.

This was pretty cool, some of the best martial arts I've ever seen...That ladder fight scene at the end was insane.

Watched Battle of Algiers this afternoon:

I have been interested in this movie because of its influence on Traffic, but it parallels recent events as well - albeit from a non-white perspective, which made it quite a different viewing experience. It was almost shot like a documentary or a newsreel, and it gave the movie a very real feel to it.
