I just saw my favorite movie of 2008 yesterday. Highly recommended, director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later) does it again.

I watched Frost/Nixon at the weekend. Tough call on this one, i thought Langella was outstanding as Nixon and Sheen's performance was pretty damn good. I genuinely felt sorry for Frost in the early rounds of questioning, his uncomfortableness was impressive acting, but i just felt that the film as a whole, lacked a little something to push it into "very good" territory.

I really liked this, thought the performances were great, thought the tete-a-tete was interesting, and don't really understand some of the middling reviews that it's been getting compared to the other oscar-bait movies. . I haven't seen everything this year but this was close to the top for me (so far).

How'd you see this? I haven't seen it playing around here.

i just watched the latest x-files movie over the weekend. it had its moments, but it still seemed dated. anything with that series past about, oh, '00-'01 was nearly unwatchable.

Yeah, I didn't expect to like that film as much as I did. It was one of my favorites of the year.

we tried to watch Waking Life, and turned it off after 20 minutes. Jittery, wobbly rotoscope discussions about philosophy. I was annoyed AND car sick.

Just saw Marley and Me - if you like dogs and you want to accept that your life can still be special after you give up your dreams and have kids, it's pretty good.

Clearly the source material was written by a columnist/MAN who is can be fairly funny and entertaining.

Basically, a chick flick written by and for dudes. Also, your chick will LOVE it.

We saw Milk last night. I've enjoyed Gus Van Zant's minimalist films of the last decade, especially Gerry and Elephant (although the Kurt Cobain one and Paranoid Park were pretty flawed). Lord knows the story of Milk was powerful and timely... but this was a really mediocre movie. Formulaic, expected. Script was cartoonish, and direction was stultifingly conventional. Penn was pretty good, but Josh Brolin stole the film. Wait for the DVD.

From goonies to almost obscurity to genuine hollywood actor in the style of Bogart. Pretty amazing transformation.

Did Anyone ever see that HBO film about Dan White with the guy from Wings? I was wondering how they brought up the Twinkie defense in it and if it was mentioned in Milk at all.

I was hyping this last year when I saw it pre-Oscars. It was my favorite of 07 by far.

Last night I saw:

I'm gonna go ahead and agree with the writer who said that Fincher somehow channeled Frank Darbont's filmmaking. The same color palette, seemingly same camera movements, etc. On one hand I feel completely let down since Fincher is such an amazing filmmaker. On the other hand though, the film was whimsical enough, scratched that fairy tale itch, and at the same time wowed me with its immense cg effort. Yes, its a special effects film, hidden away under the flap of a Brad Pitt vehicle. So much of what they accomplished with the aging (with Cate Blanchett included) is the gut of the film. Sounds obvious, but when you walk out of the film, you aren't talking about the story, you are talking about how eerie it is that they can make Pitt and Blanchett look years younger or older seamlessly. Who need botox?

Tonight we went and saw:

Image

Confession: I've never seen the stage play. If you read reviews, talk shows, etc apparently I'm the only one who hasn't seen the play. I feel like this is automatically setting it up for a fall. Like its being judged on this whole other level of greatness, instead of the celluloid level.

It was an adequate film. It wasn't revelatory, it wasn't awe-inspiringly beautiful (Deakins was the cinematographer, btw), and if actors phone in performances, perhaps this wasn't but it wasn't inspired. We've seen these characters before, and I refuse to believe that people are casting Amy Adams for roles still. She plays mousey extremely well, and thats about it. In Doubt, whenever the acting reached a certain level her very noticeable blank look ruined whatever pinnacle her co-star was aspiring to reach. PSH was great, though once again his level of expertise here probably hurt him, since we're used to him displaying a great range. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Streep pretty much has an Oscar nomination. Its not that hard. Its Meryl freakin' Streep. Once again, simply an adequate outing.
