Somehow, I can't find any appeal to the concept of drinking sludge out of a possum's ass, but hey, g'head...

Damn, this had me rolling. Glad to have you "back" tentoze.

Derris, you missed my favorite, the original Weihenstephaner. It's a Helles or Munich-style golden lager (which was originally brewed to compete with Czech Pilsners).

As far as the originals: This Weihenstephaner is almost as good as good ol' Paulaner's Munich Style. The Spaten I've had has always been slightly skunky (similar to every Heineken I've ever imbibed). American micro making a great Helles is Stoudt with their Stoudt's Gold and Abita's Andy Gator is actually pretty decent if not a little heavy on the aftertaste.

I usually drink beers seasonally:

AUTUMN/WINTER: Porters, other darky/malty beers like brown and black ales and dunkel lagers
SPRING/SUMMER: Witbier/White Ales/Hefe spectrum and also tend to really like Golden Ales and Golden/Helles/Munich style lagers. I'll occasionally go for a Pale Ale if I'm feeling like getting my hop on. Other than that, I really dislike heavily hopped beers.

I still buy 24 packs of cheap cans pretty regularly, for the same reason. Sometimes I just want "beer," not an experience.

Just a quick update to say that i cracked open the St Bernardus as my first foray into the world of proper beer. I was amazed how drinkable it was for the strength, very smooth, towards the end i almost felt like i was polishing off a fine glass of port.

Then i had a sleep.

I've now nearly finished the Delirium Tremens and I'm fucking blown away by this. Absolutely delicious.

Now I'm gonna have another sleep.

Cheers.

I've convinced FemDerris to go on a "date" with me to a local GastroPub that has an insane collection of craft beer on tap and a vast array in bottles.

Consider my interest piqued. I've passed on these guys several times because of the bottles and packaging they come in.

This and the St. Feuillien's will be picked up for the Super Bowl I think.

Too sharp, too much booze flavor? That's what I recall thinking but it's been awhile.

She knows it's coming. But, I she seems to be on board. Gonna get her trying some of the witbiers or tripels. I want her to try the Allagash white (and myself as well).

Yeah, almost as if there's a shot of vodka in the bottle.

Things from their menu that I've had, you haven't (I think), and that I would recommend:

DRAFT
Brouerij Verhaeghe - Duchese du Borgnone ...This is a flemish red, it taste a little like cherries if I recall correctly, and is blood red. Special, interesting stuff. If you're ok diverting from the straight and narrow, this is a good'n.

and NOT the Northcoast - Brother Thelonius. It's ok, but not up to the standards you've already gotten used to.

BOTTLE
Caracole Amber
Brooklyn - Sorachi Ace ...This fucker was GOOD. Really surprised me.
and not really the Lakefront - Fixed Gear ...this was the best thing they make that I had in Milwaukee, but that's not saying much

and shit I can't even finish reading that list... I'm only at the L's. That's a lot of choices, shitloads of them belgians.

Borgnone is something I thought I'd hate but I actually liked it. My wife ordered and I was skeptical. Not something I'd like to have more than one of though.

I used to like Brother Thelonious a lot but I haven't had it in a long time. I wonder if I'd still like it.

(Thelonius) I had one, once, I think last year, and I remember thinking it tasted too american. I could be wrong.

Whatever you do, Derris, make the first one count, because you can taste less and less as you go through the beers.

Man I love fridge kegs. But it's a little spooky how quickly they get empty. It's about 15 beers, and yet it's gone in like 2 days. Still, 15 beers' worth of relaxing the fuck out after work, for the recycling cannister space of about 4 bottles. The grocery store just started stocking these... I may do this again. I got this giant mug with the huge can of Paulaner I posted before. I think it's a 1.5L... feels just like what they served beer in at the Hofbrauhaus in Munich. Come to think of it, this may be related to what I said before about the keg going dry too quickly.

Shipyaaaaaahd - Pugsley's XXXX IPA

Well, I wet my panties about their delicious porter, and this is the only other from the series I could find. Had it last night. It's good, not amazing. It's got a wierd dry taste stuck in the middle, like it was built off a cheaper, shittier beer, and then jazzed up with better malt and lots of hops. It's not bad at all, but things like The Vermonster, Dogfish 90 Minute, Pliny the Elder, Hopslam, and from Ale Asylum (in Madison) the Satisfaction Jacksin are all superior. Stick with the porter, this field's too crowded with talent. B-

Narragansett - Porter
Image
I didn't know they made this stuff. Their main offering is complete and utter swill, a step above Iron City (I just puke burped typing that) and a step below PBR. So when I saw sixers of these tallboys... I was morbidly curious. And you know what? It's not fucking bad. Not at all. Lord Knows I love me some fucking crushable cans, and some fucking Porter for some reason - I seem to keep liking every porter I try - but this was really a decent beer. Low expectations are surely part of it, but for the money, this out-kicks its coverage. B

So, I went to CBus today, and aside from loading up on a case of fat tire, a 1/2 gal of Tito's and a 4 pack of St. Bernadus Wit, I hooked up a few of the big St. Bernadus' including the 12 or whatever, and the Brooklyn Local 1 & 2.

Oh, and I picked up a 1/2 gallon of Gin called 13th Colony- distilled in Americus, GA - disco gar's home town.

Modern Monks Rye Lager from a Cask and Tap

Massive amounts of Hallertau Hersbrucker hops were brought to the brewery directly from Germany via the special guest brewer, and added to the mash, boil, and at knock-out. The result? Loads of luscious floral hop flavor colliding with a spicy rye character, and leaving this crisp lager with endless depth. Weighing in at an approachable 4.5% ABV

Damn dude, excellent haul. I'm seeing a shitload of local vodkas and gins these days, here and Wisconsin, which makes me think it's "everywhere" and not just "Places I live or visit." Wonder if it really is a trend, and what's behind it. Also pleeeease do post up what you think of those beerz.

As an aside...

fat tire is grossly marketed shit to "green-thinking" retards.
i applaud the attempt to meld a couple styles. but it doesn't work; AND it's near gag-worthy.
sell some more horseshit based on your philosophy, instead of the qualities of your product.
kids are dumb.

//just sayin. not even close to a good beer even though the packaging, marketing and backslapping would make you think otherwise. and people drink a lot of miller lite.
