I'm not a big fan or anything (though I do like her moxie), but I like the idea behind her new album. I heard about this on a local station and went to her website to check up on it. She's doing an entire album of material written by lesser-known songwriters that she feels strongly about. This strikes me as very cool. This is like her 18th album, so I mean, she's got to do something different, and this just seems like a creative way to give back a little bit.

Thoughts?

Who are the writers?

Her site doesn't seem to say, but there is this blurb: "I'm as enthusiastic about these guys as I was when I first heard people like Jackson Browne and John Prine in my early days."

But who are they?

Yeh, it seems if the whole thrust of the album is touting songs by under-valued writers, they would be a little more interested in actually NAMING said writers.

Squirggle... you'd probably really enjoy Cry Cry Cry's s/t album, actually, their only album.

It's three popular neo-folkies (Dar Williams, Lucy Kaplansky, and Richard Shindell) covering lesser known folk tunes that are fantastic (and one R.E.M. tune).

Highly recommended.

I know of Dar Williams, as she makes regular rotation of 105.5 here. Cool, man.

A friend sent me acopy of this several months ago---unfortunately, a couple of the tracks are scrambled from burning, but Cold Missouri Waters is about as fine a folk song, hell any kind of song, as I've heard in many moons.
