But not just any CDs.
They are CDs we don't think our fellow Obnerians will have. And that are relatively easy to obtain.

Please include RIYLs

Brinsley Schwarz - Nervous On the Road/New Favourites Of...
RIYL: Nick Lowe, The Band, The Kinks, The Rumour
It's Nick's early-70's band and they so desparately wanted to be The Band that it hurts. But with songs as good as these songs are, it's just about the best kind of hurt I can possibly imagine. "Surrender To The Rhythm" has the greatest Hammond part this side of "Whiter Shade Of Pale". And the original version of "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding?" is on here and, IMO, blows away elvis' cover. This amazing 2-fer is everything that is good and right about both roots rock and britpop. Earthy, catchy, fun, and written and performed with zest and a sense of humor.

Also check out the Brinsley album that preceded these 2: Silver Pistol. (But avoid any of their earlier output, with the exception of one or two individual great songs.)

And yeah, Shrimp Boat is coming soon! (Unless someone else wants to bring it up.)

Phaser, Sway -- surprisingly good record. Really strong soncrafting. RIYL recent Spiritualized, late period Blur, a less patient late period Talk Talk, side one of Meddle Pink Floyd.

julien neto - le fumeur de ciel [Type Records UK]

my favorite ambient/electronic release this year. here's a few reviews:

"Julien Neto has produced a record which unequivocally boasts some of the most beautiful noise you will hear this year." - Speakers Push The Air

"It’s impossible not to get sucked into Neto’s world and want to stay for a very long time." - Indieworkshop

"...At once beautifully understated and unassuming yet intoxicatingly potent and affecting Le Fumeur de Ciel is an embarrassment of riches, especially for those who share Neto's melancholy and romantic temperament..." - Igloomag

"Quite rightly hailed as a brilliant piece of work, this comes highly recommended." - Smallfish

Bar Kokhba Sextet: John Zorn's 50th Anniversary Celebration
Image

Seriously high-intensity set of this amazing sextet:

Cyro Baptista: Percussion
Joey Baron: Drums
Greg Cohen: Bass
Mark Feldman: Violin
Erik Friedlander: Cello
Marc Ribot: Guitar

. . . doing John Zorn's Jewish-derived jazz. Ribot's presence adds an intriguing Cuban influence that strangely makes the music occasionally surf-driven. Baron and Baptista are going insane playing off each other. One of the most fun jazz releases I've heard in quite a while. RIYL: Ornette Coleman, other Zorn Masada-based projects.

Along the same lines . . .

Jamie Saft Trio: Astaroth: Book of Angels Vol. 1 Jamie Saft Trio Plays Masada Book Two
Image
Again, more Zorn compositions, this time a bunch of his new Masada works (all unheard until this release) as interpreted by a piano trio. Masada's Greg Cohen handles bass, Ben Perowsky on drums. Much more rigid than the other Masada-based projects due to Saft's piano, which has an almost classical edge to it (similar to Brad Mehldau, actually.)[/img]

I don't do ambient nor electronic, but that album cover makes me moist.

This is one from my Listmania, and it's perfect.

Audience was Howard Werth's band. Who's Howard Werth? Apart from singing and playing guitar in Audience, he was slated to replace Jim Morrison in The Doors. This is not to say that Audience is in any way like The Doors, it's a testament to Werth's vocal strength. After Audience wound down, he did some interesting solo things, but nothing too remarkable until he landed in LA at the end of the seventies and fell in with the Dangerhouse crowd. He collaborated with X (before Manzerak hit the scene--another Doors tie-in) and recorded the blistering "Obsolete" single for Dangerhouse.

"The House On The Hill" is a rich record, the songs feature great guitar work from Werth, support by wonderful sax and flute arrangements. Gus Dudgeon's production is flawless. The title track is wonderfully gothic, with imagery that would drive the Bauhaus gang insane with envy.

The album is often characterized as "Prog" or "Art" rock, but it really transcends these labels. Some of the tracks are light and airy, others more urgent and driving.

It's readily available on Amazon.

RIYL: Early Yes, Procol Harum

Another from my Listmania. This is seventies sloppy, bluesy, theatrical rock and roll of the highest degree.

SAHB were tremendous musicians, and Alex the consumate showman--a mad professor/story-teller. The version of "I Just Want To Make Love To You" on this record is unequalled--they close it out with a horn ensemble that makes the crescendo of Mussorgsky's "Great Gate Of Kiev" seem tiny.

Some of you may recognize "The Hammer Song" from Nick Cave's rendition on Kicking Against The Pricks. Other standouts are "Midnight Moses" (I dare anyone to play this and supress the urge to crank the intro when Alex' "Hey...hey, hey, hey" kick in) and "Saint Anthony" (which may be one of the best rock and roll songs ever written).

All of you people who were gushing over Led Zepellin really need to hear this record. It's got the blues roots that propelled the likes of Zepellin and The Stones to stardom, but it marries it with a theatrical sense a la Alice Cooper and Kiss.

if you think you'll like this, you'll probably like it

i recommend it to people who like hardcore and do something different with it, like put swing/ska in it. also there's an acoustic track that either pays tribute to or mocks Against Me! or both. also, there's a lot about zombies and robots.[/img]
