Absolutely. I'd never heard these guys, but heard a LOT about this album, and finally checked them out when the 3-disc 10th Anniversary edition came out. Well worth the extra investment, and I only listen to the original mix of the album. The US mix is just too glossy and forced, but the original British mix is raw and aggressive like it should be. Haven't watched the DVD yet, however.

Is this the one with the people wrapped in plastic wrap on the cover?

I've always heard this heralded as some brit-pop masterpiece.

RIYL?

Huh, never heard any version but the british one (I assume the one I bought in the Uk was not an import, at least)., either way.

I love this album so fucking much it's like all time top 20 for me. The manics slid into mediocre brit pop after this, but the holy bible is one raw blast of aggression, sort of punk meets glam meets post punk meets britpop.

At this I think Richey was anorexic, alcoholic and borderline insane; and the lyrics are so bile filed and bleak that I can't put this on too often.

Stylus had two good reviews of it here and here.

I haven't heard the reissue but I don't really have the desire to hear the american version. I'm quite happy with my single cd brit version.

'The Holy Bible' is a good album (infact MSP's only good album) but at the same time I don't think it's "all that". Most of it's classic status is based around Ritchie's disappearance.

It would have probably made my Top 20 that year but all that really means is there's been 250 albums released since then that are as good if not better.

A classic mostly just for "Yes," but it's also pretty damn consistent all the way through. I would pay good money just to be able to find out what happened to Richey.

I checked this out earlier this year and really like it, but still haven't been able to bring myself to buy the 3-disk set for $25+, although I've come really close a few times.
