Did any of you ever see them live?? I'm a huge fan but the one time that I saw them in Portland they were simply AWFUL - I'm not certain if they just weren't in sync or if a couple of them were drunk but they couldn't hold a beat. One interesting thing is that Jimmy Eat World opened for them - I believe this was shortly after Static Prevails came out - They made the night worthwhile - I could do without some of their new stuff but they were great back then.

Seen them plenty of times and they never disappointed. Granted, I was a lot younger then and knew even less about music, not that I know much now either. I loved going to see them live and they were part of the greatest bill ever for me at 17...

Static Prevails was produced by the frontman of Triple Fast, so that shit was quality, and to this day I still enjoy ALL of their music. Futures is overall weak, but I dig that sound when I'm in the mood.

From punknews.org :

Victory has announced that it will be releasing an upcoming CD/DVD live release from recently reunited Chicago act, The Smoking Popes. Due out February 28th, 2006, the as-yet untitled live release will be supported with the previously confirmed tour this winter. The bill will include Bayside and will run from February 22nd to March 12th.

The band included Josh, Eli and Matt Caterer and Mike Felumlee who went on to Duvall, Colossal and Alkaline Trio. They broke up in 1999 shortly after releasing their second Capitol release, Destination Failure. A posthumous release of the covers collection titled The Party's Over followed in 2001. Bands like Fall Out Boy, Alkaline Trio and tourmates Bayside claim the band as a seminal influence. Their full length, Born to Quit even drew accolades from Morrissey who said: "I thought that album was extraordinary, the most lovable thing I'd heard in years."

The band announced their reunion in August and performed at the Flower15 charity festival last month.

I actually found a copy of this in the dollar bin couple weeks ago. Not bad for what it is.
