3-unit apartment building my wife and I lived in when we lived in Limestone a decade ago burned down this morning. A couple and their young son died.

It was the worst place I'd ever lived. Old, moldy, full of cockroaches, owned by a dishonest 80-year old "Southern Gentleman" lawyer (who died last year).

Don't know who the people were yet, since the bodies haven't been identified.

But they lived in the apartment I used to live in.

Damn.

I'm sure Rev. Lee Peterson would say they were blacks who were waiting in the fire for the firefighters to save them.

I have yet to live in a house or apartment where anyone died shortly before or after I lived there. Death has come pretty close to my residence a few times. My next door neighbor who built our house has a heart attack on his front yard when I was around 6yrs old. The old lady renting the house across the street had a stroke in her garden and an african american guy shot his brother from his car at an apartment building across from the complex I used to live in. That was the most hardcore crime to occur near me.

The bodies haven't been recovered yet, even though excavation has been going on since about 9 a.m.

I guess it's possible they burned the building down and took off, but if they did, the building collapsed on their SUV. That was dug out at about 10.

Fire excavators found the bodies early afternoon. I knew the woman and her ex-husband but not her boyfriend or son, who died in the fire. Second kid stayed at his dad's house in Presque Isle last night so didn't get trapped in the fire.

Apparently they ran out of oil last night and stoked up an old wood stove. It was 10 below here last night. Looks like the fire started next to the wood stove.

damn. Ten below = problems.
