What would you put up there? Albums that you feel anyone who claimed they were even remotely into indie music must own. List some other choices.

I'm aiming for one album per artist. So feel free to debate which album is the crucial one to own from an artist. Also, feel free to say if an artist or album really doesn't need to be on the list at all. Such as it's just not that well known or important to warrant it, even if it is a decent album.

Okay, I had:

The Replacements - Tim over Let It Be
Bjork - Debut over Post
Flaming Lips - Soft Bulletin over Clouds Taste Metallic
Pavement - Slanted over Crooked
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation over Goo

and Mike and paper seem to differ on Fugazi

What do the majority of the people think?

I had the following 29 on my first draft. I pretty much considered most of them to be the solid choice album and AllMusic gives each one five out of five.

Beck - Mellow Gold
Bjork - Debut
Blur - Parklife
Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady
Clash - London Calling
Dinosaur Jr. - You're Living All Over Me
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing…
Elvis Costello - My Aim Is True
Jesus And Mary Chain - Psychocandy
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
Liz Phair - Exile In Guyville
Minutemen - Double Nickels On The Dime
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left
Pavement - Slanted & Enchanted
Pixies - Doolittle
Portishead - Dummy
Primal Scream - Screamadelica
Pulp - Different Class
R.E.M. - Murmur
Radiohead - OK Computer
Replacements - Tim
Smiths - The Queen Is Dead
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
Stereolab - Emperor Tomato Ketchup
Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
Velvet Underground & Nico - Velvet Underground & Nico
Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes
XTC - Skylarking

I would have said "13 Songs" too but it's a compilation, not a proper* album.

* I could really care less, but I'm sure other people will complain.

I'd definitely go 13 Songs for Fugazi.

For Pavement I'd also pick CRCR over Slanted just because I think the former will have broader appeal.

For Sonic Youth I'd actually pick Sister over Daydream because it's shorter and punchier and probably a little easier to digest.

Doolittle is a good choice for the Pixies, but so is Surfer Rosa.

Anyway, I like most of your choices except for Bjork - Debut, XTC - Skylarking, and The Replacements - Tim.

Besides the obvious choices like OK Computer and The Queen Is Dead, I've thought of including:

I own neither of these.

The following should be owned by anyone with more than 100 albums:

Adam And The Ants: Kings Of The Wild Frontier
The Soft Boys: Underwater Moonlight
The Stooges: Funhouse
Television: Marquee Moon
The Sex Pistols: NMTB
Chameleons UK: Strange Times
X: Los Angeles
The Ramones: s/t
Wall Of Voodoo: Call Of The West
The Damned: Machine Gun Etiquette

Hilarious.

Emperor Tomato Ketchup is, in my opinion, one of the worst Stereolab releases, including all B-side compilations and EPs. I don't really understand why that one gets the praise unless it's one of those things where a couple people said it and everyone jumped on the bandwagon. It's got some good songs, but they can do so much better.

?

Are you really going to try to say that those albums are drastically different in terms of quality?

I prefer Daydream Nation myself, but I suppose I was thinking more in terms of "starters". I guess that isn't really what the thread is about, but Sister was the album that got me into Sonic Youth.

I'll admit it doesn't grab you by the lapels and shake you until the change falls out of your pockets, but it still strikes a decent mood.

I viewed this thread as kind of an indie "cultural literacy" effort. "Marquee Moon" is something this peer group should know and at least respect if not appreciate.

Fair enough point, you did say you don't own The Queen is Dead or OK Computer, and I suppose that's the way I feel about Television too.

But I just think the whole idea of a canon of albums you have to own is stupid.

Dinosaur Jr. - You're Living All Over Me -- MEH
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing… -- Just stop
Elvis Costello - My Aim Is True -- even this is pretty boring
Jesus And Mary Chain - Psychocandy -- AWESOME
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures -- Worst on the list?
Liz Phair - Exile In Guyville -- Never heard
Minutemen - Double Nickels On The Dime -- unlistenable
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless -- great, doesn't belong on anyone's top 100
Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left -- thinking about this album put me to sleep
Pavement - Slanted & Enchanted -- terrible
Pixies - Doolittle -- beyond qual
Portishead - Dummy -- just stop
Primal Scream - Screamadelica -- I have tried and tried. Not that good
Pulp - Different Class -- Common People could seriously be my favorite song...the rest of this does not compare
R.E.M. - Murmur -- not so much
Radiohead - OK Computer -- beyond qual
Replacements - Tim -- When I think of groups that SHOULD be good, and the difference in reverence and reality, they are in the top 5
Smiths - The Queen Is Dead -- GO AWAY
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation -- GO AWAY
Stereolab - Emperor Tomato Ketchup -- GO AWAY
Stone Roses - The Stone Roses - pretty good. Somewhere near the top 5000
Velvet Underground & Nico - Velvet Underground & Nico -- 2 good songs
Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes -- yeah, why not?
XTC - Skylarking - never heard

Is it any wonder my tastes don't jive here?

the SY talk is interesting b/c I found DN much easier to get into than Sister initially, but I later came to much prefer the latter.
