so, i recently moved to a new apartment with two people i did not previously know. they're great, but one of my new roommates constantly and almost exclusively listens to house music- something i have not ever been inclined to explore and/or enjoy.

i suppose i can appreciate the appeal of going to see DJs and hearing this genre live and in the moment, but i really just don't understand why one would be compelled to listen to it on CD. i'm not annoyed as much as i am perplexed. it just seems so... repetitive- the same beats and sounds over and over. am i missing something? maybe he just listens to particularly bad artists and i wouldn't know? forgive me for the inherent ignorance of these questions, i'm very curious and hoping some of you could shed some light on the matter.

well 'House/Techno/ whatever' is almost as broad as saying 'rock' but that sounds like some crap Gatecrasher type shit, so you're probably right - he listens to bad artists. Any of the artists i posted (IDM is a genre) are good though.

In any particular musical genre everything sounds the same until you really listen to it.

That being said, a lot of generic house/techno is extremely repetitive.

exactly, that's why it's a genre

yeah but that doesn't mean you should ignore the good stuff. I mean there's a shit ton of generic indie (death cab, modest mouse et al) but that doesn't mean i don't still listen to the good stuff. Hip hop too, anything really has artists who are generic.

i asked him what genre he usually listens to, and he said house. i asked for specific names and he happened to be listening to a compilation with a bunch of different DJs, soo... i'm sure there is some really good stuff out there that i would probably like, but he's cool guy with otherwise good taste, and i guess i just can't see how the thump thump thump is enjoyable to anyone. at any rate, i don't really have a point anymore, so to each his own i suppose.

now how do i get him to start blasting music that i like...

For me, techno is synonymous with a certain type of drug and once you've crossed that line, so they tell me, things make a lot more sense.

Cocaine? Ecstacy?

Which drug, really?

Crack? Acid? Shrooms?

i won't lie
this is very true.

i went through a year or two romance with both trance, deep house and a certain drug.
