AM I MISSING SOMETHING?!?

His Janktastic retread of The Whisper Song (which is somehow MORE Cringewrothy, and possibly even downright G.R.O.S.S.) and the basic tunelessness, and terrible rapping of his past efforts have made this guy moy most "dey wuh?" rapper.

I mean, I think most folks know I enjoy crunk v. backpacker, and this guy might be the South's answer to rap white boys can name check, and still wear ironice tshirts and Buddy Holly glasses, but I plain doen't fucking get it.

Anyone care to try to explain this? Chase/Cotton? Jewelz? Contra?

people that love souther hip hop have been adoring this guy forever, i dont' know much about him. the few songs i've heard over the years didn't grab me, but i didn't give them much of a chance.

i don't think his latest single is indicative of him though.

Once again; I think it, LooGAR posts it.

I'm not a crunk afficionado by any stretch - I like it in spots - but his stuff just sounds tuneless, labored and (worst off) not at all fun.

What's the point?

I thought the rap forum was only for MFDoom related unlistenableness, not wanna be crunk unlistenableness.

i thought it WAS for unlistenablewannabe crunk unlistenableness. Hey, if most of the posts in there are about doom and ghostface, it's probably becuase it seems like there's usually a lot more news about those two. and because they're the most broadly listened to acts over there.

It's not my fault you Z-Grades wouldn't know real rap if it hit you in its Impala with 20" Blades on it ;)

I have just heard muchos talk about banner for 2-3 years now and then when I hear his stuff on the radio or see it on BET it is not only not worth searching out, but like I said tin-eared production and bad choruses.

I'm not a huge fan of the genre, but I'd vote Banner as my favorite in there. overall, though, i think crunk's pretty lame.

Depends on why you like it/how you consume it. I view crunk rap like I view professional wrestling: it is hilarious to see how far these guys will go to humiliate themselves, their culture, etc...

are you fittin' the new single into this thesis? I'm slightly let down by it, but more because I always have supremely high expectations for the Pete Rock tracks.

NOICE, what'd you have to say about the inclusion of the DWYCK single? Cos, you know that shit was IMPOSSIBLE to find before that fucking thing came out.

I thought he did Rubber Band Man but I just figured out that was T.I.

I just checked David Banner's site and the song in question came up and it pretty much sucks. It's like Whisper Song lite.

i will say this - i heard the entirely uncensored version of "play" in a separate kids' dance floor at a bat mitzvah this past weekend and i can honestly say that it was the single most offensive thing (in context of a bat mitzvah, obviously) i've ever experienced.

i wrote about it here
