Kiss Might Be Moving To All-New Members In Classic Makeup

09/26/2005 6:00 PM, Yahoo! Music
LAUNCH Radio Networks

Is an all-new Kiss on the horizon, one that doesn't have any original members? It's possible, according to the band's manager. According to the New York Times, Kiss manager Doc McGhee "has been toying with the idea of recruiting an entire band to...don the band's famous makeup." McGhee said, "Kiss is more like Doritos or Pepsi, as far as a brand name is concerned. They're more characters than the individual person. I think (new members) have a legitimate chance to carry the franchise."

Kiss singer-bassist Gene Simmons doesn't necessarily disagree with that idea. He said that the concept of original members isn't widely held by fans, and it isn't really accurate anyway.

"There's no question that there's a core of fans -- five-10 percent, my sense is -- who believe in original members,” Simmons said. “And yet, when you look at original members, the Beatles are not original members -- Ringo is not an original member; the Stones -- barely. You know, they've had so many members come and go, but it's the Stones; and AC/DC's aren't original members; and Van Halen; and Journey...you go down the list of every -- almost every band you can think of."

----

(As usual, Gene's logic doesn't follow through. None of his comparisons replaced ALL their members)

That, and well, Kiss just sucks.

didnt some surf rock band do something like this - send about 4 different 'clone' bands around the US on tour at the same time? Man or Astroman? Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet? some band like those anyway.

He can't really believe that people would still flock to what essentially would be Kissamania, except with $150 tickets.

Yeah. Dumb. This idea Gene has of Kiss As Franchise really came through on that interview where he tried to flirt with the most unsexual being on the planet, Terry Gross. He's a businessman first.

I wish KISS had never formed to begin with and was glad to hear they were done touring. Now I have to go back to hating them again.

This will end up as another reality TV-type ploy. It's still isn't as shameful as INXS looking for a new lead singer American Idol-style but it's close.

Actually, it's worse. Much, much, worse. I would say 4x worse.

What's that group (includes former members of Savatage) that only tours around Christmas...? They do multiple nights at the same time, but in that case, they kind of have to...

It's actually nothing new...I remember reading interviews from the mid-80's where Paul & Gene both theorized that someday there could be a version of KISS with no original members.

anyone who bought that kiss coffin deserves...well, to be buried in it.

eh, how hard is it to ding some dork who memorized every kiss lick and wants to get laid by scary 43 year-old peroxide blondes with smoker's cough?

Fairport Convention put out one album with no original members in the group (though they did change their name to Fairport for just that album).

Yeah, they're pretty impressive in a prog-classical, over-the-top way.

Like a metal Yanni.

They play here in KC every Xmas season. In a few years they've gone from playing the 3300 seat venue to the one that holds almost 20,000.

Somebody likes that junk. ( shrugs )
