every year i discover a couple "classic" artists/bands that previously i had ignored (for whatever reason), and end up with a new obsession.

this year, my favorite by far has been the wedding present. the obsession has led me to cinerama as well...and i have yet to be let down by mr. gedge. i think i enjoy the seamonsters album the most, but i truly enjoy 'em all.

runner up: blonde redhead

I got into Kyuss pretty heavily this year...

Also went from a casual White Stripes fan to a hardcore fan after Saturday's show.

It's nice to see some love for Blonde Redhead.

For me...it's probably either Vetiver or Devendra Banhart. I didn't necessarily discover them this year but I bought and listened to their albums this year.

I got into The New Radicals last year, but in 2005 I went completely overboard and bought over 20 albums/CD-singles Gregg Alexander worked on.

Yay for Blonde Redhead!

An older band I've been listening to a LOT lately is Can.

As far as newer stuff goes, I'll get back to ya on this one, I know there's a few I just recently discovered.

Ike Reilly. The senator sent me Salesman and Racist, and it blew my mind. Not what I was expecting.

Hard to pick just one....

Freddy Lynxx & the Jet Boys Larger Than Life Dusted - Lynxx takes Johnny Thunders worship to the Nth degree, then adds horns.

The Everyothers s/t - described it before as 11 turbocharged rewrites of Bowie's "Queen Bitch" - forget modern glam-pretenders like the Killers, these guys bring the tunes and the magic.

The Someloves Something Or Other - Dom Mariani's post-Stems pre-DM3 band delved more into sweet jangly power pop than those other units.

Archie Shepp Attica Blues - jazz that tries to reconcile its egghead trajectory with its black urban music beginnings. Facking awesome (and I find it more accessible than Eddie Gale's similarly intended Ghetto Music, which could also make this list). Thanks for these two, Billy G!

I must hear this. Soon.

I've always dug them from the outside but I've really gotten in to The Clash this year on a deeper level.

I'm sure Steve is proud like a papa.

i'm not sure any of the albums that i've heard first in 2005 could be discoveries because they've all been on my list for awhile for various reasons. the one album that completely took me by surprise, though, was more songs about buildings and food. all i was trying to do was complete my talking heads collection and i saw it in the used bin for $4. i didn't know anything about it other than the last two songs. i took it home and was blown away by it.

other notables:

brian eno - before and after science
george mccrae - rock your baby
genesis - foxtrot

Favorite from last year that I didn't discover until this year is the Wayne Robbins & The Hellsayers album that I've talked a lot about called The Lonesome Sea. Kind of like Doug Martsch and his Built To Spill take on Neil Young, but with more lap steel.

Favorite recent discovery from the 90s is that Shack Waterpistol cd that I made a thread about recently here, but I already had one of their other albums. Maybe the Chief Assassin to the Sinister CD from Three Mile Pilot, circa 1993, but I was already a big fan of the Black Heart Procession and Pinback, the two bands they later became.

Maybe have to think about it more ...

2 albums I swiped from my little bro that I like ALOT. I still have heard nothing else from these artists.

Easy. Lee Hazlewood---this guy is fantastic. I went back and bought his entire catalog. Highly recommended. Thanks to billy g.

Runners up: The Wedding Present and Orange Juice. I'm not sure how I haven't heard these bands before this year, as they are right up my alley, but I'm glad that I have now. Thanks to Billzebub and Konstantine.

A Prayer for Owen Meaney is one of my all-time faves. What a great scene with the Christmas play.
