I've been lurking around this board and CMJ for quite some time but rarely post.

Anyway, I have to travel to Atlanta for business Oct 13 - 18. Can anyone recommend any good record stores, pubs or places to see shows?

Thanks!

We can potentially flood you with responses. What part of town will you be anchored to, and how far can you travel from it? What are your interests?

The EARL and its immediate surroundings are a recommended off-beat visit spot. I assume the Gravity Pub is still there as well, which was a heavily-haunted spot for would-be Obners back 4 years ago.

I'll be staying close to the Georgia World Congress Center but and can travel any distance by cab.

Of course if the Braves are still in the playoffs I will have to go to a game.

Music interests - Babyshambles, Paddingtons, Arctic Monkeys, Brian Wilson, Beatles, Supergrass, Grandaddy, Pete Yorn, Mr.T Experience, Pinhead Gunpowder...

Go to Little 5 Points for records. Criminal Records, Wax N' Facts and More Dusty Than Digital are there. It and East Atlanta are the "hipper" parts of town.

Poncey-Highland has come up as a cooler area for clubs and to get your car carjacked. Druken Unicorn is there in MJQ. I like the Righteous Room as a neighborhood pub.

Go here too: http://www.lennysbar.com/

All of the Atl. mongerers are sure to chime in shortly.

Don't know of anything worthwhile near World Congress Center. I guess The Tabernacle is kind of near there.

Wax n Facts is a great store especially for vintage vinyl. Their used vinyl section will always net you something interesting.

Criminal Records in that same Little 5 Points neighborhood has a great selection of indie stuff and also sells collectible toys, comics and magazines.

While you are down there, grab a beer at the Yacht Club, a burrito at El Myr or a slice at Little 5 Points Pizza; there's also a bunch of stores selling clothes and hippie crap down there as well.

From where you are staying at the WCG, the more touristy stuff is close by: The World of Coca Cola and the like. A fucking huge aquarium is about to open down there as well but I'm not sure when.

If you are feeling needy for cultural or historical shit check out the Martin Luther King Centre, the High Museum, the Atlanta History Center, The Carter Presidential Library or the Cyclorama.

And no trip to the ATL would be complete without a visit to the "Spring Street Ballet", the world famous Cheetah shoe modeling establishment.

Drinky can probably tell you some more hip shit to do.

Make sure you go to the Buford Highway Flea Market.

I'm gonna say that's a result of me having shut off every sort of code or graphic I possibly can in my profile, in a vain attempt to forestall my inevitable, forcefull removal from the University system.

I had plans to go to Amoeba, but were having a little issue here with fires. At this point they are about a mile or so from my house. Should be okay - but not sure if I'll make it out to the show now.

shows (that I'd consider going to):

Sat 15 - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah @ The Earl

Sun 16 - Black Dice, Growing @ The Drunken Unicorn

Sun 16 - Acid Mothers Temple @ The Earl

Mon 17 - Six Organs of Admittance @ Eyedrum

record stores:

These have been pretty well covered with the L5P spots (Criminal Records & Wax'N'Facts which I frequent pretty often).

I'd also suggest Full Moon Records. It's tiny, but they have some cool stuff, and it's in a cool little area which brings me to...

restaurants:

If you go over to Full Moon (it's a straight shot from L5P if you head down McClendon), you should try The Flying Biscuit, or if it's too busy, try Gato Bizco, the little place across the street. There's also a Felini's Pizza over there which is basically the same as L5P Pizza.

However, for pizza I'd recommend going to Grant Central East in East Atlanta or Camelli's on Ponce de Leon in the Kroger parking lot across the street from MJQ/Drunken Unicorn.

My favorite sushi place lately is Zuma which is actually within walking distance from where I live. A lot of people prefer MF Sushi on Ponce, but personally I find it to be overpriced and the portions are painfully small, even for sushi (the sashimi is almost non-existant).

Right across Highland from Zuma is a little cafe called Roman Lily, and diagonal from that is the Highland Bakery, both of which are really good and might be considered for weekend brunch. Other good places for that (including Flying Biscuit and Gato Bizco mentioned earlier) are Thumbs Up, Ria's Bluebird (which is right next to a really good fried seafood place called Six Feet Under because it overlooks Oakland Cemetery), and Radial. All of these places with the exception of Roman Lily get really crowded on weekends, but the wait at Radial is usually manageable and generally worth it.

I could go on and on, but I guess you didn't really ask for restaurant recs anyway :)

Whatever you do, don't get stuck eating and hanging out around where you're staying in downtown.

Hmmmm.... I didn't know Eyedrum was still around. I second the Flying Biscuit recommendation. GREAT brunch eats.

Oh shit, I forgot...

bars:

97 Estoria - great neighborhood place I go to a lot. Nice atmosphere, decent food.

The Brick Store (in downtown Decatur) - great, but extremely popular bar with a rotating assortment of Belgian beers. Mmmmmm. Downtown Decatur might be worth checking out, too, if you've got tons of free time to do all of this shit. You could eat at Taqueria Del Sol and check out Decatur CD (nothing special) which are all on the same street as The Brick Store, West Ponce de Leon. Wuxtry Atlanta is another little record store that's in Decatur. They have some cool old vinyl (and some 78s), but it's really not worth going too far out of your way for.

There are the East Atlanta places which have already been mentioned, The Earl and The Gravity Pub, and if you're over there also check out East Atlanta Lounge which is right across the street from The Earl.

That's about all I can think of right now for worthwhile bars. I really don't go to them so much anymore.

Yeah, I like the Brick Store as well, plus you can take MARTA out to Decatur from where you are staying Downtown pretty easily.
