I only discovered this today. Check this out:

Seona Dancing was a short-lived 80s pop duo from Reading, UK, which featured Ricky Gervais and Bill Macrae. Gervais provided vocals, while Macrae took responsibility for the keyboards, producing a sound typical of the new romantic era - dominant synthesized pianos over a rhythmic bassline and the obligatory drum machine.

Seona Dancing never achieved great success in the UK, releasing only two singles, a total of four songs. The a-sides More To Lose and Bitter Heart were coupled up with You're On My Side and Tell Her for the 7" singles, while 12" versions extended More To Lose and Bitter Heart for the dance floor. Additionally, Razormaid's Joseph Watt got hold of Bitter Heart and stretched it out to a DJ-friendly 6:17.

Although Seona Dancing's achievements in the UK were minimal, the duo managed a curious surge of popularity in the Phillipines. DWRTFM, a Manila radio station, began to play More To Lose, curiously choosing to keep its true identity a closely-guarded secret. Occasionally listing it as Fade, performed by fictitious band Medium (and occasionally describing it as Medium, by Fade...), the station even interrupted the middle of the track to ensure other radio stations would be unable to use the track. Eventually, around a year later, rival station DWXB102 was able to reveal its true identity.

Hang on, though... Ricky Gervais?

Sounding suspiciously like David Bowie and looking alarmingly androgynous in a twee sailor suit and full make-up, this is indeed the same Ricky Gervais who managed Suede for a while, slightly prior to them achieving any success, spent some time spouting vitriolic satire on Channel Four's The 11 O'Clock Show, and is undoubtedly remembered most fondly for his activities as David Brent in the Office comedy series.

Soundwise, Seona Dancing are comparable to Fiction Factory with a splash of Simple Minds, the occasional glimpse of It's Immaterial and a dash of early Talk Talk. It's standard New Romantic fun, and it's pleasantly surprising to find that it's not too bad at all. Bill Macrae's keyboards provide that classic new wave sound, and even the overblown poetic angst of Gervais' lyrics only serve to place it perfectly in the 80s.
