Have any of you purchased any DualDiscs? If so, have they worked for you?
I've heard there are a lot of glitches with them, one being that the CD side often doesn't work well in standalone DVD players (which is what I play all my CDs through).
The new Fiona Apple that comes out tomorrow has a DualDisc version with some live footage from Largo in LA which seems like it'd be pretty cool. But I don't want to buy it if it's only going to be a hassle to play.
It's a crappy new technology that only some players will handle, despite the notice on the packaging that says something about it working on something like "all but a small number" of players. A
brand new, very highly-rated CD-burner that I bought would not even see the disc at all. The other option is Sony's "hardly plays anywhere at all" XCP-saddled copy-protected "CD shaped media item" (because it cannot legally be called a CD if it has copy protection on it."
Please, if you can, don't buy this album at all - purchasing the DualDisc tells Sony (and all labels) that their new product is being welcomed by buyers, and the other option is a copy-protected CD that is 99.5% certain to not work in any computer you put it in without installing their copy-protected player (this is Sony's new XCP copy-protection scheme which does NOT rely on something being installed to prevent copying. The Sony player that comes on the disc will only allow a small number of copies to me made, including crappy Windows Media files. It will NOT rip to wav or mp3 easily, if at all. When I buy music, I buy the right to listen to that music any friggin' way I want to. Sony has no right whatsoever to determine that I don't get the right to listen to it on my Ipod.
The best bet is to pretend this album doesn't exist at all and listen to the leaked version that came out earlier this year. The bonus there is that one hasn't been mostly re-recorded, eliminating Jon Brion's excellent production work on all but two tracks.
Sony's not getting any of my money anymore, not until they do away with this kind of crap. Notice that none of the other major labels are following Sony's lead with the copy protection.
