So I finally saw this over the weekend, at one of our second-run/pub theaters. What an excellent film! I wouldn't consider myself a huge fan of rap music, but it was interesting to see this guy hook up with some very rudimentary "studio" gear, and create a song. I don't know if I mean that as a compliment or not, but it was cool seeing the process work and hearing the song come together.

Also, from a regional standpoint, it takes place in Memphis, TN. I could literally feel the heat and humidity watching the film. I also know there were a few folks in the audience who were probably like, "HUH?" trying to understand the main character. Terrence Howard was excellent. He did an excellent job at playing the hard, rough exterior, but when you get down to it, still able to play the hurt, rejected interior.

I must admit, I left the theater humming the chorus of "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp."

Look for it on dvd or at the cheap theater.

This could apply to a Guided by Voices documentary as well, no?

Interestingly, the spot DJay hangs out with his horribly-cornrowed ho (eek!) is a couple blocks from my old house, and not really 'ghetto' at all. In fact, Cybill Shepard's house is like right behind him and over a couple million-dollar homes. Regardless, pretty sweet movie, and moreso if you're from Memphis and get the references (Millbranch Rd., etc.)

If I can do that, I'll buy it.

I saw this in the theatre, and like it a lot. DJ Qualls is pretty funny as the white dude, and Luda does a goodjob of being that dude that done got too big for the block.

I really enjoyed this, but I'm a total wannabe musician. It was interesting to see them put together something with barely any equipment. I enjoy Anthony Anderson for some reason and Howard was excellent. That part where Qualls comes in with his MPC and they lay down that first beat is great.

Dude, I saw the movie last summer and I still burst out into "Whop' That Trick" fits. Especially since I live with my brother who's all about the crunk and the bitches and the hos.

Finally got around to seeing this last night. Highly recommended for all us music lovers. Very gritty and real. Terrance Howard should get some sort of recognition for this, seeing as how his performance is better than 99% of what's out there.
