OK, so I've decided it's time I get something by Os Mutantes.

Should I:

A. Just settle for the best-of which can be gotten pretty cheaply and contains liner notes by and was compiled by David Byrne?

or

B. Try to track down the first few albums at somewhat reasonable prices (say around $20 each, and probably used)?

If it turns out that I really, really like them, then I'll probably want the full albums. However, if it turns out that I really only car about a few songs, and those happen to be on the comp, then I could be satisfied wiith that.

Any ideas? I'm sure some of you guys are pretty familiar with them.

(Oh, and I decided that I liked them when I heard a few songs off of the best-of in a record store.)

The first 2 albums are really worth having.
I don't know what is on the Best Of, but I stand by my first statement.

I also know nothing about the best-of, but the self-titled really is worth having. I doubt you can find it for much cheaper than $30-35, though.

The first two albums are really good...

But I have the best-of, and that does me just fine.

I have 5 albums by them. They are all consistently good albums, but none of them are great. I'd say you could get by easily with just the greatest hits or get something else brazilian instead from someone better like:

Gilberto Gil
Caetano Veloso
Sergio Sampaio
Secos e Molhados
Marcos Valle
Joao Donato
Lo Borges
Chico Buarque
Jorge Ben

Thought a few people (or Poptodd at a minimum) would be interested in this.

Sergio Dias shares a list of 15 albums that influenced Os Mutantes:

A bunch of their stuff is on spotify. I bet they were an even bigger influence on Os Novos Baianos.
