I've only seen A History of Violence, but can whole-heartedly recommend that you see Serenity.

They're both worth seeing. I knew A History of Violence was going to be good, but I was surprised by how fun Serenity ended up being. To put things in context, I never saw Firefly, yet I still followed the story behind Serenity without any problems.

Serenity was fucking awesome!
