I know that this has been done 8000 times, but I need a new system. I'm likely moving in the next couple of months (still within LA) and want to junk my disparate racks and replace 'em with a one-wall floor to top of arm reach system with a capacity of ~5000

I remember someone posting about racks they built using some combo of bricks/cindar blocks and 1"by3"s or something like that. Speak up if that was you. Anyone else with any ideas/suggestions.

I hope you're wrong...not that I want to deny Cybin a nice rack system but he'll probably never see this thread and wouldn't be able to help me.

I moved not too long ago and had to change how I store my cds. I haven't even really unpacked them yet because I'm not sure what to do with them.

Yesterday I broke down and bought this:

Image

Sure it won't fit my whole collection, but it's sturdy and will fit in the space I have.

I dunno. I'm still looking for the ultimate solution but until then it will have to be a hodge-podge collection of racks.

A friend of mine just uses shelves from Ikea. She bought the wall-mount type and just has two massive, long shelves that run along the wall.

Does it come with the nice plant?

On a more serious note, how many does it hold? Is nice.

You have a nice rack. ;)

I actually have that one too. Problem is, its one of ten racks I have to go along with 6 piles of cds on the floor and dresser. If I had wall space to accomodate one more rack like that, I'd probably just go ahead and buy it. I'm somewhat glad that I don't though because I'd like to avoid doing the easy thing and come up with a better overall solution.

Heh heh.

The site says it holds 480 CDs. I just realized mine is slightly smaller. :(

OfficeMax had some nice ones on sale for $39.99 or something, and they looked huge, but didn't say how many they hold.

I bought one at Value City for $39.99 and it holds like 480. 2 more of those babies and my whole collection could live happily together.

we use these BILLY cases from IKEA to store CDs and DVDs here at work:

we ordered the little CD shelf inserts that convert the shelf space for CDs.

I would like those shelf inserts better if they were cheaper and didn't have so many verticals in them. you could just add some more shelves by drilling in some new holes to hang the shelves. The shelves would just be deeper, but that's ok, right? Or you could prop up some shelves on some blocks.

We actually have 2 types of shelf inserts - the ones you speak of, with the vertical segments, plus we have some that don't have verticals. I think they may have stopped selling the older inserts without the vertical pieces, and replaced them with these new ones. I like the old ones better.

fp,

how much do those things cost?
I just did the store locator thingy, so maybe that will lead me to find one. You make these or something, right?

I had recently been looking for a large rack, and came across someone selling this one (made by Leslie Dame, holds 1500) on Craigslist for $100:

Nice guy, and turns out he reviews movies, so he was generous enough to throw in copies of Shawshank, Casino, Goodfellas & the James Dean collection. Sweet, right? Only problem...in my giddiness I totally misjudged how big the f'n thing is. Can't get it into my house. Gotta find some way to take it apart & put it together again. Idiot.

i'm also looking for a new method for cd storage. to not change the room too much, i'd need it to be no wider than two feet, but it could be 8-feet tall. i haven't seen anything near what i'm looking for yet, though. maybe i need another ikea trip.

I like "Movetron" boxes, the ones that are ~10 x 12 x 23.

i used the cardboard boxes that 24 cans of soda come in. The cd's fit in perfectly and i slide them under my bed. also very easy for moving.

those are pretty flimsy, no?

Gordo, I would have thought the cd rack would come unassembled. Does it fit thru a doorway?

Nah...the guy had just moved into a new house, and didn't have the room for it (it's something like 5.5 feet wide, with the same height). So it was sitting in his enclosed front porch. He's got something like 2500 DVDs, and was having a custom cabinet built. The rack is in perfect condition; have a great spot picked out next to my office/lair in the basement, but it's too big for the back doorway. If I go through the front door, I can't get it down the stairwell, and even if I could, I can't turn it to fit into the space.

So one day very soon I'll try to take it apart without totally screwing it up.

if you are asking me aobut the soda 24 boxes, i'm not talking about the ones you get at the grocery store. But the ones where four 6 packs are laid flat in a thick cardboard box. You can most likely get them for free at a whole sale beverage places.
