How about a 4-hour documentary?:
The Wonderful, Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl
Yeah, it is 4 hours. But it's fucking riveting. Great flick.

Do you like Pedro Almodovar? I recently saw Talk to Her - knowing the storyline, I never thought I would have liked it, but I did.

Oldboy, if you haven't seen it yet. Hitchcockian suspense combined with revenge-flick and a twist you really don't expect.

Not much into movies anymore, but these used to be a few of my favorites:

8 1/2 - Fellini
Amarcord - Fellini
L'Avventura - Antonioni
Andrei Rublev - Tarkovsky
Cries and Whispers - Bergman
Fanny and Alexander - Bergman

I can give you some more when I can actually go home and look at my collection. I haven't really thought about most of these in a long time.

Haven't seen a forien film that has beat City of God in the past year+, though...

I just saw Good Bye Lenin! and I thought that was pretty great.

The Sea Inside was good too.

I just saw Citizen Dog from Thailand at a film festival. It's a lotta fun, kinda like an Asian Amelie but with sooo much CGI. It's worth paying admission just to see the mountain of recycled plastic bottles rising out of downtown Bangkok.

I'll tell you a foreign movie NOT to get: Dog Days

It's like the Austrian version of Gummo

The Sorrow and the Pity? More famous for it's Annie Hall connections.

These are all things I have on DVD or video, but I know are on DVD since that is what you are renting.

Naked by Mike Leigh was just released by Criterion, and that's a great movie. One of my favorites.

Buffet Froid--French movie from the 80s that is a great blend of film noir and absurdism. Gerard Depardu is in it (but don't hold that against it).

Nelly and Monsieur Arnaud
Jules and Jim -- standard classic
The Cranes are Flying -- amazing camera work
I am Cuba -- by guy who did above
The Man with the Movie Camera --silent Russian film
Soldier of Orange -- early Paul Verhoven about WWII
Rififi - often called best heist film ever
Insomnia -- screw Al Pacino
The Long Good Friday -- before Bob Hoskins sucked
Breaking the Waves
Heavenly Creatures -- I think it's one of the best of the 90s
Repulsion -- Polanski
Peeping Tom -- really fucked up and amazing that it was made in 1960
The Long Goodbye -- not indie or foreign but fucking great
Secrets & Lies -- more Mike Leigh
Minnie and Moskowitz -- funny Cassavetes movie
Saturday Night and Sunday Morning -- classic 60s British "kitchen sink" film
I'll Sleep When I'm Dead -- stupid title, but good recent British noir with Clive Owen (if you like existential depressing stuff)
The Woman in the Dunes -- Japanese...also existential, also sort of erotic
American Movie -- you've prob seen this, but it's damn funny but also really depressing
Two Lane Blacktop -- James Taylor, Dennis Wilson, Warren Oates (see my avatar) and cars. also existential

just got this from a friend. looking forward to starting it.

chris, i'm not sure if you're a scorsese fan but i recently watched my voyage to italy and he narrates how the italian cinema had an effect on his storytelling. he covers a lot of diferent films by italian directors and here you will see the inspiration for mean streets--you'll see it coming a mile away.

in any case it gave me quite a list of movies to check out.

Fun: Shaolin Soccer and/or Kung Fu Hustle (one at a time -- if you like one, you'll like the other; comedy is a bit base at times [Jerry Lewis slapstick], but the action and some of the visual gags are great).

it was promoted as Fargo's little brother. it wasn't exactly high octane action but still intriguing. it's was kinda weird though that Albert, the main guy in the movie, had a Rainman thing going on, and the actor that played him looked like a young Dustin Hoffman.
