The second full-length release from psychedelic bread bakers and bird whisperers Badgerlore -- represented on this release by beard-core ambassadors Ben Chasny (Six Organs Of Admittance, Comets On Fire), Tom Carter (Charalambides), Pete Swanson (Yellow Swans), and Rob Fisk (7 Year Rabbit Cycle, ex-Deerhoof) -- Stories For Owls features six beautifully lush, organic pieces that rise and fall with the group’s broke-down, burned-up improv and the interplay of piano, vocals, and dual guitars. The music is organized around the conceptual theme of birds constructing nests, and each track explores this idea differently. Stories For Owls also showcases the talents of two newcomers; Tom Carter, whose playing seems beamed in from some entirely off-kilter universe; and Pete Swanson, who by grabbing and processing live sound, both in real time and through tape-delay, gives the already rickety skeletons of these songs an even greater fragility and tenderness.

My god this record kills. I have decided that neither Chasny nor Tom Carter can do any wrong. The addition of Carter and Swanson actually brought in new elements as opposed to just bringing them along for namesake which was certainly a pleasant surprise. Easily my new favorite album of the year.

Would you classify their sound as experimental?

I wouldn't simply becasue with the exception of Pete Swanson, none of them really do anything different than what they do in their primary bands. That being said a case can certainly be made for calling Tom Carter's guitar experimental as at times it seems like there is more in the spaces between his notes than in the notes themselves. He really does creat some beautiful sounds on that guitar.

Conceptually, this record isn't really much more experimental than any other concept album. It's just done really well though. I would say RIYL: maybe that August Born or Lichens record, Charalambides, or a really spacey clone of Davenport Family.

Sounds like something I should hear.
