we haven't had a graphic design thread in a while.

what trade magazines do you read?

i used to read tons of them when i worked at an agency, then upon leaving agency life, i took a much needed two year break from that kind of insular thinking.

but i just got a subscription to Print and How, and i'm enjoying both.

I like both Print and How, and still look through Communication Arts as well. Those are the only subscriptions I have here through the office.

Edit: I forgot about a "free" subscription mag I get called GD USA. It's not all that great, usually about 75-85% ads. But they have a decent design annual that makes the free subscription worthwhile. Their website is www.gdusa.com.

I prefer design sites though, 'cause i don't like waiting a month for new work:

I don't subscribe to any, but I pick up a few when I'm at B&N or Tower. Usually:

Luerzers Archive
How
Print
CMYK
Sometimes Communications Arts, sometimes a Photog mag of some sort as well or Fast Company.

Online sources:
Design Observer
Gig Posters
We Make Money Not Art
Marketing Genius from Maple Creative
AdJab
Ad Rants

Newer Finds, I haven't read as much of them yet:
Business + Design
Mark Simonson's Notebook

hey designer dudes and dudettes...

aside from the moral dilema, can you get in any kind trouble for copying software such as the adobe creative suite? Will the Adobe police come get me or is this pretty common practice?

I like, and look forward to, reading each month:

How
Communication Arts
Photoshop User Magazine
Layers Magazine

All the FREE Stuff that VEER sends is usually good. I especially like their monthy Font mini catalogs.

PASTE --- Not a GD Mag, but has some nice cross-over appeal.

A freelance designer/art director rents some space in our agency and he gets PRINT and ADbuster. So I read those gratis.

I like the design going on in WIRED, Wallpaper*.

Unless you have gobs and gobs of illegal software or are sharing your illegal copies with gobs and gobs of people, I would bet that you will probably fly successfully under the radar. Yes, it is illegal, but you can probably skate if it's just for you.

I used to have copies that I stumbled upon here and there, but last year I bought the whole suite, and it feels nice being legit. The other way to do it is to find a student and get the educational version. It's less illegal than stealing and much cheaper than the retail version.

Either way, you are a Sinner in the eyes of the LORD.

I just saw this video recently. It was some vid that showed the top 10 sports fights or something. Homeboy gets clocked by a pitch, then instantly reacts by kicking the catcher before charging the mound. It was pretty amazing really. I think it made #2 or 3 on the list. I'll try to do some searching and come up with it again.

Here's the vid....crappy quality, but you get the idea.

Edit: I'm moving this to the main board, methinks it's deserving of its own thread.

by the way, this thread was inspired by me getting a subscription of both How and Print together for only $36.

that's less than some issues of Print.

why is it so difficult to get a normal paper sample, with just the paper in various weights and styles

i try and order them and all i get is designers showing off, and a lack of information about the paper i want to use.

Call your local paper rep. I'm not sure where you're located, but if it's a large enough city (which I think should be if I remember right) then they should be able to provide you with whatever samples you need. I talk to my rep with Clampitt Paper here more than anyone else. Depending on the paper, I can get full reams at times.

Technically, of course! Realistically, no. Not unless you try selling it on Ebay or something stupid like that.

Pretty common practice. We're talking about software that costs many, many hundreds of dollars. I say as long as you're not making money with it, there's no harm being done, and if you decide to go pro, then pay Adobe. It works out well for them - the pirated software you learned on actually lead you to pay for it later on.

Now, one thing I don't understand - from what I understand, the newest Adobe stuff uses that validation deal like Windows XP has, where when you install it has to contact Adobe and verify itself, and then it can be used, and it will do this every time you install. If you fail to verify, the software stops working, or something else crippling like that.. Did you find copies of CS that did not have this feature?

no, a guy at work is helping me out with that whole deal, I've got to email him or something...I wasn't listening.

I don't think the first edition of CS did that.

(Or at least I hope it didn't...)
