So Alan McGee says about Mogwai's upcoming album. Cute, huh?

How was Happy Songs anyway?

I've heard a few of the tracks and they are good, but "possibly better than Loveless" is funny-ass hyperbole. I think I'll use it for everyday situations just to annoy people.

I've always found Mogwai to be "slighty better than Portishead" and MBV to be "yeah, they're pretty good, I guess."

Besides, don't people say this about EVERY Mogwai album? and doesn't Alan McGee say this about every album he's been tried to sell since Loveless? baash blimshah!

Bah...

Mogwai is to Portishead as Explosions in the sky is to Jamiraquai (sp?)...
Can't really compare the 2...

As for the "better than loveless", I think that's more of a boastful statement that the album might reinvent/refind guitar-based soundscapes, much as MBV did with "loveless" so long ago...

Only thing is, Mogwai's albums are going to age more gracefully over time. This might seem like a ridiculous comment today but, in 2016, who knows?

And that Autolux album is the balls - really f'in good. I'd still take Mogwai over Autolux, though - on record or live. Not a criticism at all, 'cause I really like Autolux, but more of a statement

Mainstream reviewers have lumped Mogwai with Portishead for a decade. Not that they're similar, but because in the 90's they garnered a Triple A-NPR audience that many indie rock/pop artists didn't.

It's very ironic, and I swear I'm not making it up. I was actually listening to the Autolux in my truck the other day and thought to myself "this is better than Loveless." Now let me qualify that by saying that I'm no Loveless worshipper, but to me the songs are just better for an album that you would probably put in the same genre. It's not nearly as "droney", for lack of a better word, as Loveless. It's super good, though.

It is quite possibly better than BSS, but I'm no BSS-worshiper...

I have a lot of albums that I rate higher than Loveless, but none would I consider better, just different. Loveless is on another plain entirely.

Loveless is overrated, sure. But that Autolux album is pretty terrible.
