Okay, so I have another job interview. She asked me to bring in a list of references.

I've only worked two jobs in my life. The first was for Wal-Mart. They don't give references outside the company. The second was a small record store. They fired me.

That leaves a grand total of zero. What do I do?

Try bringing with you a list of personal references.

What job are you interviewing for? Also, how old are you?

References are often a formality. Sounds like you are just starting out, so a family friend, teacher / professor should work

That's another way. Lie. Put some of us down as former employers.

Professors will do if you've little to no real world experience. Why were you fired? You may be better off confronting this right off the bat.

Record store. 20.

I don't go to college and I've been out of highschool for two years so I don't really have any teachers.

I'm considering just listing character references. My grandfather and uncle without saying they're relatives. They have different last names.

And I have two female friends who are a few years older than me with fancy, proper jobs. So they'll probably do.

What record store requires references? I wouldn't sweat it, and if it's an issue for 'em I wouldn't want to work there.

we fired someone today for lying on their resume - we check every single reference and educational degree.

for a job at a record store - doubt they care all that much - a personal reference that you are dependable would probably be enough.

I'd go with these before the more family-oriented ones.

And I'm curious about the resume/firing thing...what part got them fired?

putting down that they got a degree from a school that is really just a diploma mill - send in your money, get your degree. we also check into past jobs to verify they actually worked there, etc.

we also sometimes fire people for stuff that comes up in their background investigation.

It was actually the first job interview I've ever been on where I DIDN'T fall flat on my face with my pants around my ankles.

Volunteer at a couple of charities regularly for a month or two and get to know the people there. Then use them as a reference. It's a win win. The charity gets a volunteer, you get a reference.

Ahhhh, out and out lying versus mere exaggeration. I guess I should remove that "brokered UDA ceasefire" if I ever apply there.

In the middle of the interview session, tell them that you were once a prostitute.

Maybe the company has a sense of humor.

or not.

Better yet, tell them, "We are all prostitutes" and see if they get the Pop Group reference. If not, strongly consider working somewhere else.

That's all I've thought. I had the tag *References available on request. tacked on to the end of my resume forever. I've never had to actually find some.

I went with a friend who works in a shoe store in the same mall, a friend who's manager of off-campus housing at her university, grandfather as a character reference, and aunt's friend, saying I watched her dogs for her.

That should be fine.
