Who are some (relatively) famous musicians who started off jamming on the streets?

Mary Lou Lord busked for years on the streets, honing her material, before eventually releasing a full-length album.

Violent Femmes got their big break when busking for the crowd waiting to go into a Pretenders show. One of the guitarists from the Pretenders heard them and offered them a slot on the bill that night.

Badly Drawn Boy. I'm not sure if he started out busking or not but, for one of his music videos, he busked on the streets during the Christmas season, raising thousands of dollars and donating it all to charity.

Stop saying Busk. It sounds... wrong. There must be another word for it.

Better.

Ugh. "busk"... ugh. What an ugly word. Sounds like Bust mis-pronounced or something.

busk sounds like "busket", as in don't say "busket" again or i will shoot you. R.Kelly played in the train stations before Public Announcement, and then relatively soon after Public Announcement, and pretty much every day since looking for pee-pee targets.

i drink cris.
you drink piss.

Not really famous...but I guess Chris Whitley did a lot of this prior to starting his recording career.

That's my point. I don't know what else to call it. The thesaurus has nothing. It's just playing music on the street or in the subway stations.

I'm more likely to give money to them than sad sack homeless guys. These guys are entertaining. But on the other hand, I'm like "well, you can't be too desperate for money or you'd have pawned the guitar already".

I have honestly never heard the term before. I guess I was using "plays on the street for money like a common troll."
