so yeah, I know nothing about them whatsoever, but wanna hear what they sound like, despite the risk of my probably thinking they sound too poppy. So which of their albums should I check out (first)?

I'd say:

Forever Breathes the Lonely Word then Strange Idols Pattern...

F'spoon can probably be more helpful.

Jangle-gazer group led by an odd man named Lawrence. Sings like Lou Reed if Morrissey told him he were Ian McCulloch, but he wound up a British Dylan. Caustic lyrics, but generally lovely music. First albums were guitar-based, some later ones Hammond-based because of Martin Duffy. One "Felt" album doesn't even have Lawrence on it. Another one was all instrumental. He later called himself Denim and retired the Felt name.

Most Recommended (I don't own several of the releases so can't testify to what they're like firsthand):

Forever Breathes The Lonely Word

Let The Snakes Crinkle Their Heads (instrumental)

or both volumes of Absolute Classic Masterpieces

This goes into much more detail and is quite helpful:

and a 'bump' of this thread to give you a Felt example:

Not to worry, they aren't the Lightning Seeds or The Ocean Blue by any stretch. Think more like Joy Division crossed with Blonde On Blonde.

Interesting. I guess it makes sense that Lawrence would have been Murdoch's inspiration. Their voices aren't similar, but their sensibilites are.

Denim On Ice is a great reckid - but very poppy and verging on the twee.

Here's a working mp3 of "Sunlight Bathed The Golden Glow". It's not my favorite Felt tune or anywhere near my favorite, but it's Felt:

Touch someone's shirt. Ask them, "Is this felt?" When they say no (because how many people wear felt?) say in return, "It is now!" HA HA.

I have to disagree with this. It sounds like Nintendo music. I used to have it and sold it because I was broke. It's okay, but I wouldn't recommend it as a starting point at all.

Besides the two I mentioned, I also have Crumbling the Antiseptic Beauty and Splendor of Fear. Both are alright, but not hardly as good Forever Breathes and Strange Idols. Me and Monkey on the Moon is also pretty good, but sounds a little different than the early stuff. I haven't heard most of the other later albums.

This line was passed to me in tenth grade by erstwhile friend David Tvrdik, who learnt of it from Jesus Ali Ross (the world's one and only - so Jesus alleged - Chicano Muslim (Arabtino, if you will)).
