i was on holidays when the whole 'shitstorm' blew over, and thus wasn't posting on CMJ at the time. So, to this day i have no idea whatsoever about how CMJ 'died'. Obviously there were technical difficulties, but someone once said something i couldn't figure out about Seth Warren killing it. So, can someone give me the story of how it all went down?

CMJ went down

Everyone went to Darrin's refugee board

Someone suggested starting our own board so we didnt have to rely on CMJ anymore

Haq took it upon himself

Someone suggested the name Obner

Obner was born

CMJ came back up

No one moved back there

Maybe I'm wrong here but I think people just got fed up with a) the board going down constantly (often for days at a time) and b) the street teamers and political types that were creating a bad atmosphere.

I, of course, created Konstantiboard to see us through the gaps when the CMJ board was down and people got a taste for avatars, posting images and everything else that entails a 'better' board.

When Haq offered to custom build a new board of our own (there was problems with Konstantiboard since it was free and had limited bandwidth) there wasn't too much opposition really and the idea was pretty much universally embraced.

As far as I remember there wasn't any cataclysmic break away, it was just a gradual feeling of distafisfaction with the CMJ Board, in terms of it's administration, maintanence, lack of facilities etc etc.

I don't think Seth Warren had any major bearing except as part of the general consensus.

I'm pretty sure he still posts here under a different name but I'm afraid I am rapidly losing track of who is who except for the most prolific of posters.

I also believe that no one was getting magazines around this same time. CMJ board members kept asking questions to the brass but no reply. We felt like we had a pretty good community and didn’t want it to die with the magazine but really felt like it was only a matter of time. The board was down for a while, came back, went right back down, than Obner was born.

Speaking of, can you buy CMJ New Music Monthly at record stores anymore or are they subscription only now? Are people still getting the subscriptions since they restarted?

Can't find them in stores here anymore but I do get my monthly issue in the mail on time now. Shocking I know.

......and then LooGar runined the board.

Yeah, I was a relative newb to CMJ when all this was going down, but I remember that there was almost universal disdain for that board and CMJ in general despite the nice community.

We are better for it IMHO.

I think so too, despite the occasional lament for the halcyon years of CMJ.

it's the same people it used to be, minus a few who didn't make the switch.

What, why do people think Seth did something? That makes no sense. That's like blaming it on blotter or some other former regular who doesn't post anymore.

I am not familiar with the laying of blame at Seth Warren's feet, but I'd be willing to bet that it was said in jest.

That's what I thought at first too, but now it seems people above took it seriously.

It's pretty much subscription-only. You can still get in the handful of stores that are in AIMS or Music Monitor Network.

Also, the CMJ board NOW ACCEPTS PICTURES! So be sure to post any non-goatse goodies you have.

Except, evidently, for the covers of the last 2 issues, neither of which has made it to the CMJ main page for some reason.

I keep meaning to post more at CMJ, but I've never been a start-it-all kind of poster. More of a quipping respondant. And there's precious little to respond to.

Obviously, those people have no sense of the community nor the power of the CMJ brand.
